Tires: 37 front & 40 rear ...
Primary Chain: adjust to 3/4 inch on the tight spot, cold, "PERIOD" ...
Oil: Run Syn3 in engine & transmission ...
Change engine oil/filter every 3K ... Change tranmission oil every 5K ...
Air Filter: replace air filter with a K&N ... Must do PREVENTIVE MAINTANCE to keep free flowing ... Run head breathers into a catch container ...
Spark Plugs: Clean and gap(0.030 inch) every 5K ... Replace when required ...
Use anti-size on threads and torque to 11 ft. lbs. ...
Frontal Area: Lean into the wind as much as possible(get under the paint) ... You can get better gas milage with a XB9R or XB12R ...
RPM's: Shift at 2500 to 3000 RPM's ...
Always keep you RPM's between 2500 & 3000 RPM's ... Never cruise at over 3000 RPM's ...
Brakes: Put NAPA(orange in color) brake pad rattle stop on the caliper pistons/brake pads(very small amount) ...
Change the fluid master cylinders once a year ...
Bearings: Wheel & belt idler pulley bearing/bearings should spin free as possible ...
If "i" can think of anything else "i" will let you'll know ???

P.S. Engine timing affects also ...
My timing is set with the timing mark just coming into the rear of the timing plug hole ...
Also run the max. high test gas "i" cab get ...
Spark plug wires: Isolate a min.(close) of 1/2 inch from engine/frame ... Make sure they are clean ...

I don't get anywhere NEAR the EPA estimated 65mpg. Around town I average in the high 40's (last fill up was better than 47mpg) and on steady highway at slightly higher than legal speeds I'll get into the mid 50's. On the Lightning Long that's close to 200 miles on a tank. Around town I find the fuel light generally coming on around 160 - 170 miles and I'll take between 3.2 to 3.6 gallons to fill. Remember the Lightning Long has the higher fuel capacity of the Ulysses. |

Just filled up today, 172 miles, 3.4 gallons, about half in town, half highway. Not too bad for 1400 miles on a Ss.

My XB9r's light came on today after 90 miles of motorway at a steady 90-110 but I then got 20.4 (and still running) after the light came on but at legal speeds. |

i too have an 06 12Ss and its still breakin in at 700 miles. i get about 140 miles before the light comes on! |

I'm at just under 700mi on my '06 Ulysses. My first fill-up was at 168 mi when the light came on and I got ~58 mpg. The next light encouraged fill-ups have been in 110-120 mi increments and I've been getting between 43-48 mpg. I haven't been topping off my tank but that shouldn't make a difference in the mpg. |

Last sat. I did about 160 miles with some people on HD's in the back country. Did it in two legs and on the first leg I found out I got 55mpg on my 05 12R.. I like that. But we did alot of 45mph riding. I'm a thinking that if I rode at a constant 60mph I may get a lil better.. However I been avg.bout 45-50mpg with all the short trips and riding in town I normaly do... |

My light comes on about 112 to 125. Average 45-49mpg. Those at higher altitudes should get better mileage but less horsepower. I am pretty heavy on the throttle, run fast everywhere and like to take off quick. |
