I recently picked up my first Buell, 03' XB9R with only 2000 miles. When I pulled it off the shipping truck and fired it up it seemed to tick (more of an obvious knock) and even after 2 tanks of premium gas it hasnt gone away. Since its my first Buell, and since I live in the middle of nowhere North Dakota, I dont have any other Buellers to compare sounds. Its an audible racket from start up to 60 mph + where the wind noise takes over and cant hear anything anyway. So my question is, how much ticking is normal?

if it sounds like a coffee can full of pennies all is well. you will come to see many things as character and actually enjoy them after a while.
if it stops making noises you can begin to worry! besides it should have some sort of aftermarket pipe on it anyway, if it doesn't your missing out on part of the experience. i am not one for overly loud bikes but the buell character really seems to be intertwined with a certain sound(it doesn't have to be loud, just full).

^^^I agree. There is no other sound out there like a Buell's. The stock muffler does it no justice. Besides, the muffler will help you forget about those other sounds, like clunking gear shifting and tapping.

Actually sounds less like pennies in a can and more like my BMW did when I threw a rod. Clack clack clack clack clack and so on....... It dosnt overheat or have a loss of power, heck, almost too much power but like said above, I dont have experience with Buell and dont have anyone else to use as a reference for sound!

It could be lifter or valve train noise.

I hear the crazy nickel jug tossing about while I ride, I am told this is acceptable and because the bike doesn't have water jackets, and is air cooled. I am used to hearing nothing but sweet RPM's from my honda car and it is a totally different experience.

Blake, are you saying that the Torque Spec on the flywheel sprocket may be causing this sound??

Is the Torque spec change an official Buell service alert, as in they are required to perform the update for free? I have an appointment with the service dept. next month, and I have to go about 120 miles to get there so I want to make sure I get everything I need in the one trip! Thanks.

It "could' be a possibility. I had mine done. Didnt make a difference. Gave me some peace of mind though.

Take it to the dealer with this updated printed in hand. It might help. Worth a shot.

Mine says on the sticker on the frame it was manufactored in September. Is there any way to know if mine needs this done or not? It's a new 06' XB12Ss with 260 miles on the clock.

See the picture shown above! The wrench is shown in position to torque the nut in question.

Where in North Dakota? I'm originally from Mandan. I know Rough Rider Harley on the strip in Mandan is a Buell dealer (although I didn't see a single one when I stopped there over July 4th last year). I did actually run into an XB12R owner at the Grand Cinemas in Bismarck and talked to him for awhile.

I know how you feel. I have only seen a couple Buells here in Richmond, VA. I'm never quite certain if my bike is riding right because I've never had another one to compare it to. I keep feeling like there is something wrong with it and keep hoping I can find someone else to give it a listen because I don't trust the local dealer, if you can even call them a dealer any more.......two '05 Lightnings......that's it.

Pcmodeler, I'm Air Force Stationed at Minot AFB, in well.... MINOT. Last march Roughrider opened a new store right here in Minot, but Only Harley, no Buell. In fact when I went in there and asked why no Buell he said he used to manage Mandan and in 8 years he saw only 4 different Buells. 4 in the entire State??????? I guess I make number 5!

ok, i got more info.. it was the compensation nut in the primary. It tore up my clutch shell and sprocket. Which explains why it went into neutral 2 times. I guess it could have been worse. Any longer and i could have damaged the whole motor.. they did take it apart and found nothing else.. just to keep you informed!!
