I'm looking to buy a used XB in CA. Should I be worried about CA emisisons, or are all XBs 50-state legal?

If not, how can I tell if the one I'm looking at is legal or not? Are there easy to find stickers?

If the bike is registered in California it should be legal anywhere. Treehuggers are sapping our horsepower.

An xb that was sold originally in Cali(unless removed by orig. owner) will have a big ugly emissions can right behind the intake scoop.

IIRC if the bike is from another state and has 7500 miles on it, then you can register it in Cali without the CA specific emissions crap.

Thanks for the replies, but I should have been more specific.

I'm looking to buy a used XB to ride in CA, but I'm considering a few bikes that are out of state.

Should I assume that anything that wasn't originally titled in CA is not 50-state legal?

Socalxb, you are correct.
If you're buying out of state it's safe to assume it is not CA legal. CA has it's own smog law (must be equiped with charcoal canister)that the other 49 states don't have to adhere by. As mentioned above if the "49 state" legal bike has over 7500 miles on it, you can bring it in & register it. Your best bet is to find a CA bike here in CA.

Yeah that charcoal canister on the fuel tank vent has to be sucking like 10hp from the rear wheel.

If I'm correct, all the canister does is help keep fuel vapors confined via a filtered return line to the intake. Is there any explanation or evidence that it causes a reduction in hp?

For anyone wanting a non-Cali Buell, send me the money to buy one here in Georgia and I will ensure it has 7500 miles on it by the time I get it to you! I'm such a giver!

Anyone know if the newer XBs (05's, 06's) are any different? I'm having a hard time finding the right bike in CA. I've found lots of nice bikes in other states, but they're nowhere near 7,500 miles. It's really getting frustrating. I love Cali, but these emissions laws are killing me. (Probably saving me too, but that's a whole other story.)
