The owners manual for my 06 xb12Ss says to use Loctite 565 thread sealant on the drain plug when reinstalling after draining the oil. I can't find this at any of my local parts places. Is there an equivalent Permatex or other product? My local NAPA had a couple of types of Permatex thread sealer & I am wondering if any of these would work.

I, honestly, would not use loctite on the drain plugs.

As long as the crush washer is in good shape/new, it should hold the torque just fine.

I would not put loctite on anything that came in direct contact with precious fluids.

Are you thinking of the red or blue loctite thread locker? 565 is a sealer to keep the oil in & I think also to help keep the drain bolt from vibrating out.

Loctite 565 is not a thread locker, it is a thread sealant. Here is the maker's description "Formulated specifically for metal, tapered pipe thread fittings, 565 PST® replaces Teflon® tape and pipe dopes. Cures rapidly to withstand 10,000 psi. Perfect as a replacement for pre-coated parts. Prevents galling and protects mated threaded areas from rust and corrosion."

Non hardening Permatex would provide a similar seal against leaks if you can't find the called for stuff.

The drain plug on my M2 has an o-ring for sealing and is made so that it pulls into metal-to-metal contact while, at the same time applying some sealing pressure to the o-ring without crushing/destroying it. Looks like a good design. No sealants are called for in the service manual.

That sounds familiar, my 03'XB is the same.

It makes sense that they would all be the same or about the same. I don't know the XB12S and why they would call for a pipe thread sealant. If it was a different kind of plug bolt or tapered pipe thread plug maybe...

or you can just do like i do and get 2 new plugs that come with new o rings and have that stuff on the threads.
