I thought I'd bring this over from the Tuber board- someone's looking for a new tranny for their S2.

I believe someone posted that the 06 transmission internals should be a bolt-in swap for any earlier Buell. Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks.

If that were the case then wouldn't there be a baker 6 that fit the XB's?

Does that mean the the new XBs have a trapdoor?
That would be awesome!

The XBs have no trap door.

But does having or not having the trap door affect the compatibility of the internals?

Not specifically, but if the internals were compatible between the new and old Buell's, then the Baker 6 for the Tubers would fit the XB's. It doesn't as I recall...

But that might be because the baker was taking advantage of "extra" space in the pre-xb cases. Buell, knowing they were building a tranny for the XB, could have built it to fit.

And in fact, I recall the baker 6 speed needing slight "machining" of the cases to grind some space. Perhaps this is not possible without the trapdoor layout, so Baker just says it won't fit.

That being said, I would still be suprised if it was a bolt in affair, particularly back to a tuber.

An XB transmission will not work with a trapdoor motor. Will they work on a earlier XB? Do not know, but could find out fairly easy.

So you can modify an XB case to accept a trapdoor tranny, but you can't modify an XB tranny to work with a trapdoor case?
Interesting.

I'd like to know if a Baker 6 can be made to work in an XB case.

Harley will realease the 06 big bikes with an extra gear. It's only a matter of time before the Sportster/Buell engine gets a 6-speed.

From a known good source I have regarding an '06 tranny in a tuber:

The 06 tranny will not fit in your S2 without machining the case. The machining process would not be an easy one.

BUMMER!

Djkaplan, talking with Erik Buell at Road America during the "homecoming", he said they couldn't do a 6 speed in the XBs, because of noise restrictions. Especially European models.

I believe that. Working where I work we build engines for the European market and they don't give a hoot about most of our performance issues as long as the engines aren't too loud. If there is a DB issue then we have a problem, stop the presses and turn the ships around!

Why would they tell us that? They want us to buy the new bikes, not refit our old ones.

'06 XB's have a different engine case for the tranny.

Boy do the xb's need a 6-speed though. Particularly the new Ulyses. I just can't imagine any modern 'touring' bike w/out a 6-speed.

Probably just because I wish my bike had one. Sorry for my digresive rant
