This bike was in the latest Cycle World. It appears to have a Buellish muffler placement. Is this the first Japanese bike to do this?

It may be if it hits production. Honda tried it with the NAS concept bike about 5 years ago.

There has, like fuel in the frame, been isolated small attempts at pulling this off. No one, until Buell, has been able to put the pieces of the puzzle together and market it.

I think court was speaking towards the whole package though Sean : ). My friends Triumph had oil in the frame, but no one before Buell has really used all that neat stuff in one package and made it work real well.

The Norton "monocoque" Formula 750 racer from about 1973 had many of the features of the XBs -- fuel in the frame, and rubber engine mounting for two. It also had a lot of attention paid to engine air ducting and truly functional aerodynamics, something that few other than Buell seem to worry much about. Of course, you could never buy a Norton with these features.

As someone who's had some really good ideas in his life (the online system Gordon Jennings and I had running in 1991 anticipated consumer-to-consumer marketing, had had about 80 percent of the features that would later make e-bay somewhat successful), I've learned how truly cheap good ideas are. No one has yet said it better than Steve Jobs, "Real geniuses ship."
