Aside from the bike not starting of course...I get a rapid fire clicking sound and the bike doesn't turn over....Is that the starter?

I gave them a tug when it happened. I get power to everything, ie lights, instruments etc...can it still be from a loose bat?

Could also be battery not charged (charging circuit problem) or a bad battery. Hot weather is supposed to be hard on batteries.

I double checked...the cables are snug...When I try to fire it up it hesitates and sounds like is right about to crank over...then I get that "toy Uzi" sound ckckckckckckckcck... The headlights work, needle sweeps, fuel pump primes.

Its your battery, My XB did the same as your's, it takes alot of umph to turn the motor over and if the battery is even slighty weak all you will get is starter solinoid clatter and when the battery gets even lower you will get a few clicks and your gages will reset.

Buy battery.

Got a voltmeter? Stick the leads on the battery then push the starter button. I think the lowest voltage the starter will work at is 11.5vdc.(someone correct if wrong) Mine would do this when my stator wasn't charging my battery.

Warranty covers batteries?

the "toy Uzi" sound ckckckckckckckcck...is your soleniod switch trying to transfer high voltage to the starter motor. The battery has enough juice for the lights and instruments but not enough to crank - replace or charge the battery.

Jason the battery is coverd under the bike warrenty for the first year I think and after that it is pro rated . Y ou should also cosider the voltage regulator. I have had to replace the regulator about 2k miles after I replaced the starter.

Mine did the same thing. First Tech replaced the starter, but when I got it home it did it again.

Second Tech said starter was probably fine all along. He said the battery voltage was fine, but the amps were way low... whatever that means.

New battery, not a single problem since.

Ditto the voltage regulator comment...my buddy lost power on a ride two days ago. We thought battery, but it turned out to be the regulator. It seems it was bad from day one. He thought his pipe was lacking. After the regulator was replaced he said he was ripping wheelies from the dealer all the way home.

It was the battery. I bought a new one for 60 bucks. the dealership said they would reimburse me for the cost only if the old battery failed the recharge test. The guy said they have to send a printout to the factory with the "failed recharge printout" in order to do it under warranty. I wasn't planning on waiting for 3 hours. Now I think my stator is going because it smells like roasted shite when I dismount.

Quick check for a bad stator.......take off the primary chain inspection cover after a good ride and you really get a good whiff. When I changed mine the smell creeped into my house from the garage.

Then its gotta be the stator or the voltage regulator - your running just off the battery voltage, now dead. If no smell as Jason suggests, its probably the voltage regulator.

Good Luck
