Sometimes when ign. is turned on , the speedo needle won't sweep. Is this a sign of a problem ? XB9SX 1600 miles. Runs fine and speedo works .

Mine has been doing that on and off for months now. Sometimes I turn the key off and on again and the speedo sweeps normally. My bike has over 16k miles on it and it hasn't caused a problem yet, but it's probably worth keeping an eye on.

Mine was doing that for about a month. Hasn't done it in a month now. If mine didn't sweep I would just turn the key off and on again. Also, it would only do it if the bike sits overnight and only on once per day. weird.

Mine's been doing that since new. I've noticed that it doesn't do it as much as it used to, though.

My speedo sweeps fine. Every third or fourth time I turn the key though, its the Tach that doesn't sweep - but then it starts working once I start the engine.

Weird.

A friend of mine at work has a City and experienced the same problem. He found a couple of grounding screws/bolts with excessive loctite. Believing that this might be preventing a good ground, he removed and cleaned the screws/bolts and then moderately reapplied loctite, the problem went away.

Where were the screws? Around the gauge asssembly?

I'm not really sure where, I'll ask him tomorrow. (Maybe he'll read this and give me a call and let me know.)

OK, Grounds #1 and #3 on both sides of the battery. Removed the bolts and cleaned the Loctite off the bolts and from the inside of the bolt hole. He then installed the bolts with "lock washers", NO LOCTITE. He also found the four bolts from the main-frame to the sub-frame loose. This is a ground path from the instrument cluster to the sub-frame. It may have also contributed to the problem.
