hi there,

ive got a really nasty vibration coming through my handlebars under braking. it is only really noticable when braking from above 45mph, and the vibration shifts from left to right. the local buell workshop has checked the disk and wheel for trueness and the triple clamp has been replaced coz they cracked it doing it up to tight.

i know this one has been done to death but i think its slightly different to previous posts, basicly im after any ideas on what to try next

any help greatly appreciated

Gees, thats no good Morgan. I would have a really good look at the balance of the tyre. Short of that check all the bolts for correct torque. Also remove the brake pads and have a look there for uneven were and glazing.

BTW hows that manual going - hope it helps.

A worn front tire will also cause that.

A worn rear tire might also cause this. I have a 2003 Yamaha R1 that developed a vibration when braking. The dealer told me that it was because the rear tire was near the end of its life. I didn't really believe him, but I got new tires anyway, and the problem totally went away! He said that some bikes will vibrate on braking when either tire starts to wear.

Ozzy a better descrption of what you mean by a vibration would help, as well as a descrption of where your feeling it. If its through the brake lever, then it could be the rotor and pads hot spotting, if its through both bars and is the bar shaking but not enough to be a wobble then it could be the front tire, or your head bearings were miss adjusted, which is fairly easy to do in a hurry. If its at the ends of the bars, I would be more inclined to say a definate tire issue. You may want to try and lift the fromt off the ground so the front wheel can spin freely, try and move the pads from the rotor so there is no drag from the brake, and give the wheel a spin, you might have a bearing going, look at the bearing color, make sure its orange and not black, the orange ones are the replacements for the black ones. Check and make sure none of the slides for the rotor are binding up. see if you can ush on the rotor and feel it move back and forth easily at each of the mounting points. If one binds up, it needs to be replaced. That can cause the vibration as well.

the vibration seems to be coming through the handle bars and im feeling it mostly on the palm of my hands. i can feel it changing from left to the right hand but i also think its coming through the brake lever also. it seems to make a little 'ticking' sound also. by vibration i mean it feels like im riding over small corregations on the road i guess??? i have the orage bearings and my fromt tyre is the origonal dunlop with 12000 km on it. the back tyre is also fairly worn...

starter that manual is treating me well but i decided to leave the tripple clamp alone, im glad i did cos the shop broke it!

thanks for all the help guys

Yeah, I'd certainly replace those tires. Also... Maybe go with Pirelli Diablo's or Mezeler Sportec M1's. They will make the bike handle quite a lot better, it won't stand up nearly as much under braking, and those two tires slide very predictably (or at least I know the front does... That's the only one I've really slid around a corner).

Ok i just got my bike back from the shop and they had put a new front tyre on it (Mezeler Sportec M1) and assured me that the vibration was fixed so off i go.. i do a couple of tests on the brakes at low speed and they seem ok then i get out on the motorway and the DAM VIBRATION is still there!!!!!!!!!!!!!

having just paid for a new tyre and an hour and a half's labour for them to diagnose the problem, to say i was pretty ticked off is an understatement.

I'll be ringing them up first thing tomorrow

If anyone has any ideas they would be well received as ive just about had it with this 'bad vibration'. So far ive checked the wheel bearings, disk, disk springs, pads and wheel and so has the shop. I dont have a torque wrench so i cant go over the front end but this has 'suposedly' been done also

cheers
