Hey

Settings are 2:45, 6:45, 4:45, and 7:15. It feels and sounds much better with these adjustments opposed to baseline. I just got back from a test ride, the bike behaved better, no popping or surging but hesitated some where between 2.5-3,000rpms at full-throttle. Could it be the exhaust system is to much for the stock ecm?

Probably not.
You just have to do some more tuning.
Make sure all the symptoms you describe are while the bike is fully warmed up.
Might I suggest a dyno-tune?

I got my Force pipe Dyno'd the other day...

The settings I ended up with are...

Off, Off, Off, 7:45. The bike is still a little too rich everywhere but 4K-5K where it's at about 14-14.6. From 2-3K it's very rich still. Down to 11:1.

Race filter, Force header and pipe, Holed airbox, TFI, XB12R.

I have a race ECM that I'm going to have set and installed. I'll see what it does with that. I think the stock ECM may be adding fuel when it expects the exhaust valve is actuated.

I cut & pasted this from another thread that I wrote since it applies here as well.

OK, as you may or may not know I have completely instrumented my bike with a rolling data logging system. I record RPM, A/F ratio, MPH, TPS & airbox temp on the road. What have I learned so far? The TFI with RACE ECM and Dobeck's recommendations for the STOCK ECM yields lambdas that are VERY rich. Like low .7s or even .6s. I could smell gas even. Lambda should be around .87 or so for max power. I am now at 3,3,3,8.5 on my TFI and still running generally rich other than at idle. Lambda is averaging around .8. I'm not going to get into the details of exactly what RPM is what lambda at what TPS etc. for now. I'll save that for another thread when I'm done with my testing.

I'm guessing now that my TFI settings may end up at 3,1,2,8.5 to get to the lambda I'm after. That 8.5 is still a bit of a mystery to me & needs some experimentation.

Anecdotally: The air temp in the air box when running = ambient. The need for a thermal barrier seems pointless unless you are sitting on a dragstrip. Maybe its different in the summer.

2K3lightning...I've got a 9, with open filter, and holes in my airbox cover, 12 top, D&D and TFI. I'm still working on the TFI. Gonna get more tune time this weekend. I'll post my settings then. I've had the last pot at 7(recommended in the past), and now since it's recommended to move it, I'm going to bump it up and see what that does! I'm going to Dyno it when I get some cash set aside.

Hogs - I just got my bike dyno'd and I ended up turning the TFI to Off, Off, Off, 7:45... It still runs rich through most of the range. I'm considering putting the old pipe (not header) back on, get another Dyno, then go with the Stock header and Force Exhaust...

M1combat,You have been playing with all these settings for awhile now, up and down ,here and there I just wonder HOW GooD or Bad the bike runs on a day to day basis with the settings you have it on now as you say off, off, off 7:45 and .... as you had it on before a few days back,... whats the biggest thing you notice in driving it, seems like to be at one area of the settings driving it and NoW completly "TFI" turned OFF what do you notice on a seat of the pants feeling forget the dyno all together seems like this tfi is a huge waste of money with your setup as well as soon to be mine? Unless is it possible you got a bad tfi ?What exhaust did you have on before the force and with all them same mods you had on your 12 How did your bike work then? It just seems werid that I think I have all the same mods as yours except with the D&D at the moment and soon to put the force on that My bike wd. go from running GReat and all of a sudden with the force system it wd. start to run way Fat (rich) then the TFI wd. be a waste of $$$$ Hmmmm... I wd. think that with the force it should draw even more free flowing with the other mods and should "NOT" run rich through the "whole power band"...I wd. think lean in some areas but what do I know ??? I remember a year or so ago ppl. running the force and having gains of up to 7,8,9 horsepower( on 9`s though ) OH btw hows that unit holding together since your welds, No signs of breakage , how many miles on it now since you rewelded it and hows that puppy SOUND.. Lots of questions hmmm Thanks Buddy...!

MAybe we have to use something instead of that TFI unit that only adds fuel, what about gearing up one of them power commanders for the x1`s or s models?? Also using one of them 4 wire heated oxygen sensors etc...

Still find it hard to believe though that one wd. run RICH all through the powerband with your setup(especially where the 12 came with the valve in the exhaust?)

Hogs, I feel your pain. Thats why I've built my data acquisition system at a cost of maybe $1,200 so far. When I've completed my testing I will absolutely know exactly whats going on at every RPM & load condition. Not to be a wise guy but those seat of the pants reports don't mean much to me. I've been riding for 43 years & I can't tell a 1 or2 hp change somewhere in the powerband. Claims of a big midrange hit may be really a severe dip in the low range and then a rapid climb back to stock HP in the middle. You just can't tell IMHO.

To your point of general drive-ability - I have done a couple of "normal" rides and recorded all the data for 30 minutes or more. My software then does a statistical analysis of the whole ride. For example I can check the average lambda at say 4100 rpm over the whole ride under all load conditions.

As to the TFI being a waste, that remains to be seen. To defend Dobeck, they built the unit for the stock ECM and not the Race which I have. At some point, I will remove it and do some tests.

I'm having a good time with this and I am learning quite a bit. I will share all my findings. The only downside for you all is my loyalty to and belief in Kevin and his Drummers.

Jersayguy,
I hear ya pal, But I also see you playing, and playing with your gear as well, Hmmm...I`m lost Buddy I think at this time I`ll weld up my force system get it so it won``t break and hang it on the wall as a dust collector and a conversation piece and run my bike as I did last year and have fun riding it, Hmmm wonder if the tfi wd. be of any use with the D&D system i`m using now and or if I wd. just be playing with that as well, Got no time for playing with the fuel curves IF its going to be up and down , up and down might as well just run the d&D without as I know it works good there plus everyone changing there settings all the time can`t be good for the engine(running fat sometimes and lean other times) as well having to drive it each time after changing the settings for the 10, 15 mins. or so at a certain rpm range for the comptuer to make it changes as well etc etc... Hogs changes his nick to "Totaly Confused"

In my case, the tfi helped a bunch.
No joke, took it out yesterday, she’s picking the front up, hitting third.

Let me know if that setup with the stock header and force can does anything better as far as that TFI is concerned If I find a used commander out there I may get a heated oxygen sensor and try that who knows...

@ the local HD dealer they charge $32.50
to run 5 or 6 base line runs.
But you have to get an appointment and sometimes
leave the bike for the day.
I set my tfi on a friends dyno and found out a few things.

Set pot 1 for best idle
Fuel under 4000 change pot 2
Fuel over 4000 change pot 3
If it surges at cruise increase pot 4.

Mike, With your testing on the 12 & mine on the 9 we will ultimately come up with the best settings for the TFI and bikes set up similar to our own.

Norris. Why are you running AFR 14,5:1?

I see you already have a much improved midrange, but Wouldn't you expect it to even be a little better if you tuned at 12,5:1, or are you at a high altitude and need to compensate or something?

I had it down too about 13.5 It was hard to start
and didn't like to idle when it was cold.
Wanted to spit back every once in a while
Showed very little gains on the dyno.
The thing is, the bike still needs a little
time to relearn. So you can't make big changes
fast. I'm still playing I'll be back
on the dyno in a week or so.

Running the new Drummer 12 right now.
But a new SS model from Kevin showed up at
my door for testing, but I'm not suppose
to tell anybody. He want tell me what's different
he said just give a try, and to hang on.
I took the flash light and looked but I can't tell
what's going on in there. I think this new stainless model is going to bad. Kevin said
it would not be as loud, which is a good thing
to me!
