Was out for a weekend ride and stopped for a coffee. After about an hour went to try and start the bike and although the dash lit up and the needle swung around like normal, all I got was a clicking sound which I assumed was probably the starter relay?

The marker lights came on but the all 4 headlamps were off. After a long and expensive tow back home, I noticed the headlamp fuse was burnt. Replaced it but still nothing changed. All that can be heard is the clicking sound when I try to start the engine.

Can a burnt headlight(s) actually prevent these bikes from starting? Went out and bought 4 new PIAA Xtreme white replacement bulbs but I'm still not convinced the bulbs are the problem. Anyone else had a similar experience?

I had a headlight fail as a short. Caused exactly what you relate. When your not pressing the start switch power goes to the headlights through the start relay. Pressing the start switch energizes the start relay which removes power from the headlights and puts it to the starter solenoid. So, yah, a shorted headlight will do that

I had the same, a bulb failed and the two posts in the bulb touched causing a short so check your bulbs as well.

Thanks guys! You were spot on! Pulled the fairing along with the headlight assembly and one of the bulbs had indeed failed.

Replaced all 4 bulbs with the new PIAA ones, turned the key and there was light and engine startup.

It's amazing that a burnt headlight would cause the engine to not start. Talk about not wanting you to ride without your headlights on
