Hi all,
loving my 2008 1125r (4k miles). I am in research mode as it's still raining here in Norcal. I seem to be seeing a lot of stuff about charging issues. Are these all with the 09? Did I read something about making sure my grounds are good? Perhaps DIYing up a heavier gauge ground wire or a second from VR to frame or engine? ANything I should do while I wait for sun?

The stator issue doesn't affect 2008 models, so there is nothing for you to do unless you want to upgrade to the higher output stator the 2009+ models use.

The charging system in the '08s is weaker than the '09s, which means that it generates less heat and isn't prone to the failures that the '09s are.

The drawback is that if you are idling in traffic with the fans on, the '08's charging system doesn't put out enough juice to charge the battery and it will slowly discharge. The bike probably won't stall, but if you end up shutting off the bike without riding it a bit to charge up the battery, you may have problems restarting it. That happened to me at MotoGP in Indy a few years ago--lots of traffic on the way to the parking area meant lots of idling, and when I went to leave later, I had to push start the bike. Not fun when it's 90+ degrees, even with a couple of guys helping try to get up enough speed to pop the clutch and get it running. Took several tries.

I recently upgraded to an EarthX LiFePo4 battery which has more capacity and a higher resting voltage than the stocker, and the bike is a lot happier starting. Of course the battery was $200+, so not cheap.
