Hey guys!

First time post, i got my Buell 1125r back from the shop after a couple of weeks in. Bought from a shady seller who didn't completely disclose everything that needed repair. To make matters worse, on leaving the shop it wasn't tied down to the trailer correctly and tipped over after we turned onto the highway. Front fairing cracked and i;m going to need a new headlight assembly. Anyway, left it in the garage for about a week not hooked up to the battery tender and today i try to fire the thing up and after one attempt at a cold start (at around 30F) it seems like the battery is down for the count. Is this normal? I'm also looking into buying a new tender, are the Harley ones any good or am i going to be paying a premium for something i can get done with a cheaper piece?

The Deltran battery tenders they sell in Harley shops are the real deal.

Your battery should last for several weeks, at a minimum, without discharging to the point of not being able to start. HOWEVER, mine has been like yours for over a year now. I just keep it on the tender any time i'm not riding it. I'm just a frugal bastard who refuses to buy a new battery until I HAVE to.

I've used the one from Walmart (Shumacher Speed Charge 1.5 amp) for almost 3 years now. It comes with 2 quick connects one with rings that attach to battery and one with clamps. I always keep it plugged in and I still have the stock battery on a 2009 1125R.

Hey Hadouken welcome and Merry Christmas also sorry to hear about your troubles. You didn't say what year 1125R you have, the 08's had a instrument cluster problem that drained the battery, if yours is an 08 you should make sure the cluster had been replaced. I use a Battery Tender Jr. with good results and you can get them for under $25 shipped to your door. Keep an eye on the classified section, good deals on the parts you need show up regularly. If you don't want to wait reach out to one of the board sponsors they will treat you well.

CTEK makes a good charger...designed by some guys in Sweden (where it's winter for tooo long)
http://www.amazon.com/CTEK-Multi-12-Volt-Battery-C harger/dp/B000FQBWCY/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UT F8&qid=1387986308&sr=1-1&keywords=ctek+battery+cha rger

if you have an '08 - you can help stop the parasitic drain by turning off the "kill" switch on the twist grip ( rt handle bar)...it disconnects the "drain" on the battery

If you need a new batt - and want to go with a lead acid (AGM) type, buy the HD brand - the battery cable terminations on the bike are designed to work with that brand of battery...other wise you will have to adapt an alternate brand battery to the battery cables on the bike.

if you need a fairing and hd light module - Jdugger had one for sale - you might PM him and see if it is still available...

if you have some extra cash after all that - you may want to look at upgrading your battery to a LiIon battery - Shorai used to sponsor the Buell effort in AMA racing...
you can see their products here (I have owned one for 3 years - I would buy their brand of charger/tender and use it ...the bikes are tough on starting and require a "full charge" in the battery to make them fire:

Welcome to the madness...and Merry Christmas!

I use the Optimate 6 for both of my bikes. Reason I got it was I was stationed in Germany and needed one that was dual voltage.

They have the Optimate 4 which works just as well and was the review that got me to look at the brand. I have been using it over 2 years now with no complaints.

Hadouken, before getting too worried about a new battery. The stock ones are very good. I'm still on my factory original with my 2008 1125R. One time when going on an extended vacation of 4 weeks I forget and shut off power to the garage and my trickle charger and the battery totally discharged. Only wanting to use a trickle charger (.5amp) it took two days/at least 48 hours to bring it back to 12.85v (totally charged). And its still hanging in there. Just some food for thought. Keep the troubleshooting simple to start with less expense, then go on from there.

And Nuts4mc got it absolutely right about the kill switch. That's a must on every ride or fire up.

Thanks guys, all great suggestions! I've read about the drain on the battery on 08's, luckily i've got a 2009. It's a shame really, they put a new battery (expensive) and a new stator (even more expensive!) in and thats why i'm a bit concerned about the battery dying so quickly. i read that the stators have a way of self-destructing on 2009's.

Anyway, i've got all the parts surprisingly cheap, New Castle HD's website is awesome, i just took the part numbers i needed a plugged them in, the prices seem to be significantly lower than what the dealership, which i used as leverage to get the price of a new fairing and headlight assembly to just under $300.

I'm just more concerned with getting this thing running so i can get the fuel stabilizer running through it for the winter. The bike not starting took me by surprise!

I f your stator is bad go with the EBR rotor and a rewound stator. Or you can go with the setup off of an 08

The BatteryMINDer 12248 restored my battery to full capacity quite nicely over a couple weeks.
