A buddy of mine made this up for me and did an amazing quality job.

It simply replaces the pillion seat with the same underpinnings reproduction. It's still got a wicked slant to it, but it should give a nice flat surface to secure a large duffel bag onto that is better than that tiny seat.

It needs a few securing points added.

From the looks of it, if you ride in the rain, you will have a buttload of water down your backside. It's bad enough with the small pillion!

On second thought, you'll probably only run this when traveling, so that would also imply bringing a rainsuit along.

Please show us what it looks like with your mounted traveling __________ installed on the plate as I'm curious about this project.

Looks similar - if a bit better-finished - to what I did for my CR.

I took an old seat, stripped it to the bare pan, and made a wood platform - two 2x4's screwed to the seat pan, going crossways, and a piece of plywood the size and shape of my Buell tail bag screwed to them. Mounted my tailbag to that and painted the wood black to match the bike. A little "backyard-engineered"...but totally functional. I'll get some pics tonight if anyone's interested.

twoseasons - after looking at it again, youre right, any rain will go right to the butt haha

I wonder how hard it'd be to add a wedge it to level it out, would also make it easier to mount stuff on it, since it'll not want to slide down as much

Why not a small alum angle to act as a break water and give a tie point that side

Hmmm... good point. I suppose if there were some unique feature of it's design or construction that made it of extraordinary educational or entertainment value, I might be willing to have a look.

oldog - i'm not clear about what you are describing. Please elaborate further.
always open to improvements of course!

I have very limited experience riding in the rain ( ya I'm a wimp OK) but I imagined that at speed, there would be very little rain collecting on the plate as it would have luggage of some sort covering it.

On writing this I can imagine rain from the luggage could roll forward, but wouldn't the rain move backwards to the rear of the bike given the speed of the bike?

Maybe you have experienced something I haven't?

Hybrid:

Yea this is the problem I had last year trying to keep my luggage off my back when all I had was the passenger seat to rest it on and strap it down to.

Every hour or so it would work it's way forward and up against my back. I'm thinking of putting velcro on the new platform and the luggage/bag to stop that creeping forward motion.

Yes the forward angle is a challenge for carrying a tent, sleeping bag, bedroll and backpack.

I wanted this addition just to help me with the camping gear - not day to day running about.

Here's some shots of my woodie...er...the rack I built.

The *other* woodie will never find its way onto badweb. Sorry. I try to keep *its* entertainment value for sharing with interested estrogen-based lifeforms...

The one on the CR isn't the most elegant, nor is it the result of expert craftsmanship (I think it took me about 30 minutes with a circular saw...), but it works very well. The tailbag usually attaches with straps through D-rings; I simply drywall-screwed the D-rings to the underside of my platform and it keeps the bag in place, no shaking, no shimmying, no sliding forward. And I can still remove/install the seat pan like a stock passenger seat (and I still have a seat with the factory cowl, in case I ever want to put it back on).

Dennis,
I'm surprised by how large a case you put on. I have a little more confidence in my application now.

You don't have any problems with your case being tippy or straining the underpinnings?

What is the white material on the underside of your mount?

you don't have any problems with your case being tippy or straining the underpinnings? no not yet that base plate came with the bag is mounted to 3/4 plywood sanded down on one end to about 3/8" and shimed up on the other to make the bag sit more level.

What is the white material on the underside of your mount? Its just a thin foam for any kind or ratteling

It is a flat sheet of aluminium with a U bolt did not use a old seat. Just a hammer and a vice.
