Bike: 2009 1125CR
Mods: EBR RACE ECM, PV5 w Auto tune, Barkers, o8 Stator with no harness, 35w HID for low beam.
Past issues: After o8 stator swap bike lost voltage to cluster but would return when clutch pulled in and rpm dropped. Also was charging as high as 16.8v. This was with the Compufire VR.

Current: Put in VR from o8 and volts read between 12.6-13.8 on ride. Stopped for gas, then as I parked I was reaching for switch and bike just stopped. Then later on ride while display showing high 12v or low 13's bike had a few 'misses' with some heavy lurching. Engine light and batt light came on then went away. This happened several times.

When I got home I checked the batt connections and neg was a bit loose but not by much. I don't think it was loose enough for connections to loose contact. batt read 12.81 steady volts on meter. I started the bike and checked stator power and at 4k rpm got 50v from each leg.

I even put in my old li-ion batt and for that the volts went to 14.4 at idle.

So I noticed that the stator wire is now coming over the rear head where before the valve adjustment it was beside. Possible that it has melted? If so would this be a possible cause?

Can a battery be bad but still show 12.81 volts?

Can even a bit loose of a connection cause this?

VR was warm to touch right after ride. I swear the wires were hotter. Can it be tested? When running the probes at batt terminals my meter match within .1 volts on the cluster for the battery.

Ideas?

Yes, I had my CR start acting a little funny last year during a group ride, then suddenly bike 100% died like I blew a fuse. Turned out one of the battery terminals was loose, took only half a turn to get it snug again, and never had an issue since.

Thanks... swapped in my li-ion for a ride and it doesn't hold a charge any more. : ( Dropped in the old batt and at idle went to 14.4 so hopefully it was just the loose connection. : )

Thanks!

Finally did some riding and all is good. loose connection seems to have been the culprit.

Amazes me that even that tiny little difference in snugness can make such a big difference in performance.

Thanks Froggy!

"Can a battery be bad but still show 12.81 volts"

Yes, the batter can hold 12+ voltage, but can fail a load test. That is won't have enough juice to turn the starter.
