I had mine drilled like Hildstrom did just for piece of mind on my part. I also sent my rotor to a machine shop down the road from the house. I had the guy do the oil jet mod at 1/16" and I think 1/4" countersink on the master spline. I can post pictures later if you'd like. After he had everything drilled and cleaned up, I also had him balance it to 12,000 rpms, just to make sure it would be good. Works like a champ, but it's the oil jet that makes the most difference. After almost 7,000 miles, my stator still looked like the day I put it in.

Blacknightrain - looked and looked, couldn't find the PM anywhere. i sent one to you as well.

Dhays1775 - did you drill holes in the rotor yourself? with a hand drill?
I can't think of anyone in my little town that could do the job.. but i'm tempted to check around. my thinking on drilling
the holes is that it would be cost saving. But i can't see me making an oil jet in the hub and then balancing the thing.

Bubba, all I did was mark the rotor myself. As long as you are accurate with your marks, making sure they're 60* apart, it shouldn't be an issue drilling the six outside holes. The big thing is just making sure you get the holes lined up for the lip inside to make sure you don't hit the magnets.

As far as the oil jet, it's a little too complicated for a garage job. The only reason for that is because of the angles involved. I know the proper way is to send it to EBR, but it may still be possible to do yourself with a hand drill. It only cost me $120 for all the drillings and balancing.

Now, the balancing...
If you are accurate with your hole spacing in the outer side of the rotor, then balancing shouldn't be affected by more than a couple grams at 12,000 RPMs. The oil jet is machined into the master spline of the rotor, so the little bit of removed metal is not far enough to the outside of the rotational area to throw any real vibrations.
Example: spinning in a park swing with your legs tucked in under you, verses the same exact weight if you stuck your legs straight out, slowing the spin because of imbalance due to weight being moved farther out from center line of rotation.

those pictures are great.. for some reason, they're easier for me to comprehend.

it actually looks doable.
am i correct on the 'oil jet' hole - the machinist drilled a slight angle down from outside the hub -> to the inner portion? or at least, there was an angle to that hole - it wasn't perpendicular so to speak?

This is a pretty crude cut away from the stator/rotor setup on the engine, but I'm sure you get the idea. I think I've got before and after pictures of my stator after around 7,000 miles. I'll post those in just a bit.
To answer your question, yes, it is drilled at an angle to shoot the oil onto the stator.

I forgot to take a picture of my stator when I installed it. Ooops. hahaha

And here is my "new" stator after about 7k. Looks like my mod worked ok in my opinion.

Bubba, I made it using paint on the computer. Only took a few minutes, and it was easier than typing it all out.

If I had all the tools at the time, I would have done it myself.

This was probably covered earlier in this thread, but just as a warning to casual readers... that hole isn't just a hole, it's a carefully engineered fix operating dynamically in a complex environment.

For example, if you make it too big, you will lower the oil pressure to other parts of the bike and break other things in bad ways.

I have no idea how to do it right, but I could name a half dozen ways to do it wrong right off the top of my head.

Reepicheep, I will not disagree on your comment, since I KNOW these bikes were supposed to have the oil jetted rotor from the start due to the increased heat from the stator.

On the other hand, I have been keeping careful tabs on everything inside my engine as close as I can, and I have yet to see any ill effects of the oil passage that I had machined into my rotor.

So, I agree completely, that this is a case of "you break it you buy it" type of scenario. Do this mod at your own risk.

My experience has been good for me, but not everyone will have the same results.

It's a shame Harley didn't do the right thing and just do a free exchange service for the rotor along with an extended goodwill replacement for the stator.

my take would be..
1st, do no harm.
-- it appears the air vents do no harm (may help)
-- if the oil jet is too small, cooling may be less than optimal, yet likely does no harm

As expensive as it is, I decided to go with the rotor from EBR. Rick's motorsports said they will warranty only with the EBR rotor. I hate to spend the bucks, but from what I have read, if you fix the rotor, stator and VR, your problems should be eliminated.

After you get your core deposit back you are only out about $200 including shipping, plus labor if you had someone else install it. Well worth it vs the cost of constantly feeding the thing stators, be it rewound or brand new.

All you really need to do is the rotor, assuming your stator was healthy and unburnt to start with it should be fine with the new rotor. I've seen many people throw VRs at the problem when it was never the cause of an issue in the first place. The stock VR is fine, but yes a CE605 is a nice upgrade if you really do have a VR failure.

See my above pic. The stator is gone.

My VR was good, but I thought, I am this far, bike is on the lift, good time to do it.

What is the benefit to the original deustch plug? If a person crimped & soldered , wouldn't that be a better connection?

just 'eyeballin' it.. i think ~ 1mm would be close... maybe a tad less
but the dimensions for the countersink
the angle of the jet
the precise location of the hole on the hub
tricky business

and i've yet to even remove my rotor.
maybe when you have it in your hand.. the specs would be less daunting

Small #69 large hole 1/4" for more go to Air Cooled Rotor. It was drilled by EBR I had to make a change because it wasent drilled all the way through that caused the stator to go bad I drilled it out and made it to big so you can see how I fix the over size hole.
