What I need is for those guys who live in Canada to bring their bikes over the border to sell them here. They'll make more money and I'll get a good deal on a bike to convert for track use.

I'm having similar problems, any idea as to what the cause is?

You have the CA carbon can installed.

Correct.. not much choice. Mine didnt drip. It sprayed fuel like a 1/8" garden hose. Boiled fuel in the frame every ride and when shut off sprayed a soild stream out the overflow.

Filled garage under my kids bedroom with vapours so it was can get dealer to fight for a refund from HD Canada.

Timebandit: "What I need is for those guys who live in Canada to bring their bikes over the border to sell them here. They'll make more money and I'll get a good deal on a bike to convert for track use."

Umm... yeah... if you would look at prices in Canada, you'd all think we're smoking crack. On average, prices here are $1500-2000 more than in the US for the same used bike.
Why? We pay about $2K more for the same bike than you boys in the US pay. Try going to a border city to buy a bike, and chances are they won't sell a Canadian one 'cause of non-compete clauses in their dealership agreements.... (example - I paid $8100 for my 2008 1125r during the fire sale - you guys were paying around $6K (IIRC)).
If they do sell you one, there's no warranty. Not even if you go back to the US. Unless it's a recall, you're SOL on everything that goes wrong.

Ratgin,

So now where do you think all of that fuel spray goes?

The CA canister certainly can't stop the fuel from boiling in the frame...

Think it through. The CA Canister receives vacuum from the front throttle body only, BELOW the throttle body. This is to "burn" the fuel vapors from the tank to reduce overall emissions (hence the "California" part).

The problem comes when you shut the bike down and the fuel tank continues to release vapors/raw fuel to through the canister and into the front cylinder. This causes an extremely rich condition on startup in the front cylinder. I am surprised you haven't seen a CEL with front o2 error or front AFR error or AFR range error yet.

If you MUST keep the carbon canister, holding the throttle open after shut down and prior to startup will help alleviate the issue as it will let the concentrated vapor/fuel from the front cylinder dilute with air in the air box/atmosphere. A throttle lock such as the vista cruise makes this very easy.

Canister: Don't overfill the tank. Maintain your coolant levels. Ride fast enough to cool the bike.

Warranty: Who's worried about getting a warranty on a 3 year old used bike? If you guys in ON can only get $3k on a trade-in, bring 'em here and I'll give you a better price. I could use a spare. Or two.

Just leave us Canadians to our bikes and you buy that ex-AMA bike on ebay,7K obo and it has the race fairings and exhaust already on it,and its serial # ends in 007 so you'd be licensed too kill

Bigevildoer, this is the quote I should have copied. This is what I meant by nailed it.

What amazes me is that people can buy a $13,000 bike at a H-D closeout sale for $5,500, and then piss and moan that it requires a $895 investment in a charging system kit to keep it going. I mean, WTF?!? You took a risk. Deal with it. This whole situation makes me think everyone who is complaining is a cheepskate who does't belong on this bike in the first place. It's time to man-up and quit whining. We all know that you don't make money buying sportbikes -- you lose it.

Kyle,

Since PA lemon doesn't cover motorcycles, did you do it under the federal lemon law?

"Just leave us Canadians to our bikes."

Nope. As long as someone pisses and moans about his bike only being worth $3k on a trade, I'm entitled to make him a better offer. If you're not a party to the transaction, you're not effected.

Time,

Not pissing nor moaning.
Just stating the fact (IMO) that i got screwed over.

Bad timing and luck as mines been a dud (and i did not buy it at firesale prices).

I paid 11k for it and it dropped 6k overnight. That hurts no matter how you look at it.

now add in the failures and the WEEKS its spent in the shop,

All that being i love the damn thing just wish i could trust it to get me there.... and back,

Love it..

Hate it..

Love it..

What day of the week is it.

My s1 sent me through the same type of roller coaster ride with the front drive pulley. 2 pulley spline failures in less than 10,000 miles. The 3rd time it went to an independent shop, same HD pulley now has over 70Kmiles on it. The parts were the same, the labor wasn't. I would be willing to bet your shop has less skilled mechanics.

A good part of 'sorting your bike out' is finding the right people to work on it.

LMAO AVC......
The Fire sale killed resale...Period

The closing of the company and lack of dealer support and parts Nailed that coffin shut..

Wish i could got towing coverd one of the 3 times my bike stranded me 700+ miles from home..

The recal didn't fix crap made one leg live slightly longer but the r/r still kept burning up.

I was glad to take my 5500 trade in and move to a reliable bike i can get parts for . Lost 2k and another 900 or so in aftermarket parts i couldn't get off.

Loved that bike and even miss it.
But i don't miss being let down by it.

My thoughts are people that whined about it realized they made a mistake buying it and blamed the bike for it, mainly cause they didn't understand how to use it. its a sportbike its meant to be ridden hard. everything "sporty" i've ever messed with loves being ridden hard, if you babied it everywhere it would fall apart, try a rotary powered car for an example.

I admit mine was bought during the fire sale, and has had stator problems. I still couldn't be happier with it even as it sits now in pieces.

I've noticed most complaints are over the 09/10 stator issues. To fellow 2008 owners what is the consensus? Do you regret buying the bike/consider it a mistake?

In addition to not filling the tank to the brim, here's another suggestion for draining fuel from the charcoal canister. When riding, downshift at higher RPMs and get in the habit of using engine braking to slow down. This induces high vacuums in the throttle bodies and hence consumes fuel from the charcoal canister. I exaggerate this technique in the last few miles before hitting the garage. It results in a perceptible reduction in fuel smell after the bike is parked.

My 08 has been a wonderful bike to own once the ECM fueling was sorted by Buell. This was done in a series of updates from dealers, the latest "062" flash being awesome.

This bike has been reliable for me, I took it to the Indy GP a few years ago from NJ.

I am looking to sell it as I am transitioning from sport to adventure riding and I need to fund the next purchase.

My '08 has a little over 21,000 miles on it and with the exception of steering head bearings and the stock ECM making the bike run awful, she's been awesome. The race ECM and Barker's pipe made a huge difference.

Oh yeah! If you can live with the crazy noise and afford the EBR ecm a Barkers makes this a whole new bike. I just couldn't handle the noise.

I road the shit out of mine 19,000 Miles worth...Lucky I didn't drop a valve I personally know of 4 that have.
IF the bike wasn't reliable. I guess the fire sale should been asis no warranty.
Not 2 years unlimited miles.

The 08 might been a better buy i really feel for anyone that paid full price.(to good friends did)

27.8k I think on her now.
A few warranty fixes, but -

Money WELL spent!
Best Birthday present I EVER gave myself.
Thank You so much Erik...

Now I have a Kick Ash outer cover.

My 08's had quite a few issues...
Battery dead/garbage 2 weeks after purchase.
Cush drive rubbers replaced
Rear turn signals died
Clutch weep x2
Fuel Pump
Steering Bearings

There are few other little things but I'm working off the top of my head here...

Hey Ratgin...
where you located, and what kind of bike are you looking for? The Ducati dealer in waterloo was willing to give me around $6K for mine on a $14.5K used Streetfighter that's really done up...

Can't guarantee he'll give you the same deal, but it's an option...

My 08 has been, tracked, crashed, toured, abused, and IMO heavily modified.

Couple of problems, but my bike is my hobbie and I love pulling it apart, a well thought out design, it's a pleasure to work on.

I did get mine cheap, 3800 with 3000 miles on it in 2009.
