I brought my bike in (2009 1125CR) just before the warranty was up to have the flickering dash looked at and I also mentioned to the dealer the the speedo sometimes goes to zero. I fully expected them to replace the IC (would have been the second time) and the speed sensor. The dealer called today and said I have a bad ECM. This is weird since the problems exist with both the stock ECM and the EBR ECM. I have a sneaking suspicion that the problems will not be fixed by an ECM. Any possible chance the dealer is correct?

I think I will have to ride around in the freezing cold and then bring it back before the end of the year.

It is most likely the speed sensor needing replacement.

I had the same problem on my 09 CR. They replaced the sensor and I haven't had a problem since. Froggy was spot on! +1 to Froggy!

I knew I had a bad speed sensor and I still had to take it in 3 times before they finally replaced it.

I'm sure it is the sensor for the speedo going to zero issue but it is extremely infrequent so I may be replacing it myself at some point. For the IC flicker, I just can't see it being the ECM. I will either bring it back again or just live with it. If it weren't for the warranty I probably would not replace it.

If it does it with both ECMs, that's a pretty good chance it's not the ECM

If they will warranty a new stock ECM, I wouldn't tell them and let them do it.

I have to let them do it so when the IC does it again the ECM can be eliminated as the problem. I just don't want to be riding it around when it goes below freezing around here but the good news is they are only a couple miles away.

The relationship you have with your service department can be more valuable if you educate them in a nice way that your forum feedback represents the experience of many Buell techs, and owners. They seem to think that.... Always be nice, let them decide. When it poops on them, you will never be questioned again.

The speed sensor will almost certainly get worse. Mine went from every couple of weeks to daily. It got so that I could predict when it was going to happen and was able to get video of it.

Well, I went in to pick up the bike almost two weeks ago and it immediately had the IC flicker before I even pulled out of the dealership. The service writer saw it and said he would have the tech look at it. I got a call shortly thereafter from the SW and he said that he thinks there is no fix. He said I could either pick up the bike or the tech would call Harley to see if there is a fix. I elected to have the dealer call Harley. I called the dealer a few days later and there "is no fix" because the signal is analog and will always have some flickering. This seems like an honest answer since the IC has always flickered, even after the first IC replacement, yet it seems like bullshit that the IC would be designed this way. The flickering is annoying and distracting, especially at night.

The dealer also thought the speedometer intermittently going to zero was due to an ECM communication error. Well, my suspicion is that there was an ECM communication error because I swapped out the ECM two miles before going to the dealership. I suspect I will need to clean and/or replace the speed sensor at some point. The strange thing is that the bike seems louder (exhaust) and runs better with the new stock ECM than with the old ECM or the EBR ECM. With the EBR ECM the engine starts to get a little jerky below 4,000 RPM, which progressively gets worse as the RPM gets lower, really bad under 3,000 RPM. The new ECM seems to run pretty good down to 3,000 ECM and just starts to get jerky but not bad until closer to 2300-2500. Granted, I only rode about a dozen miles but the difference was obvious. I wish the EBR ECM ran as good down low in the RPM range. I've already sent it back to EBR once to have the Barker's tune installed but I may have to email EBR to see if they can smooth it out in the lower ranges; if not, I am considering leaving this new stock one in.
