I was talking to Danny Estlick at NJMP yesterday and asked him if he had any stator issues with his bike last year. He pointed me to his mechanic(i'm assuming it was his mechanic)and said 'he's the man to talk to about that'. So I ask him and he says' what charging?' like it was not an issue and I said no, with the stator nut backing off and him and Danny were like 'Oh yea man all the time until we used the 7ft torque wrench on it! Now I should've asked specifically what the torque was but I didnt. I'm assuming pretty f'n high if they are using or even joking about using a 7ft torque wrench on it.
This is putting me in a spot since I think I'm hearing my stator nut intermittently, but of course not when I took it to the dealer.
I dont want to void my warranty but I also dont want catastrophic failure so I think I'm going to have my hd mechanic pull the cover and inspect it. If its loose it'll be warranty...if not I just pay for the piece of mind.
what do ya think?
Let me be CLEAR- Neither I nor Danny's mechanic are advising anyone to do this, just passing along info that may help in making your own decisions about your stator nut.

I've been thinking of checking mine also. Planning on doing it this winter along with some other stuff. I don't hear any "abnormal" noise yet at 9,000 miles. Hope I can get it tight enough, my torque wrench is only 6ft long with the extension handle.

What do you mean when you say you are hearing the stator nut?

well I'm not 100% sure because it doesnt happen all the time.
I have over 8000 miles on it so i know the sound of the engine. Sometimes I hear a light metallic knock coming from the left side of the motor. Enough of a noise to make me notice for sure. Its not like a regular lower end knock and when i put my hand on the stator I swore I could feel it too. Again this only happens once in awhile so I cant always stop , listen and feel for the noise.
There is no rhyme or reason to it...its not like it only does it when I start it or when I'm on it or anything like that- its intermittent which is why its not making much sense to me.
I made a date to have my hd mech look at it to keep my warranty straight. I'll keep you informed.
Chevy- I do believe a special tool is needed to keep the crank stationary while the nut is being tightened(I know other methods can be used but I'm concerned with warranty), just fyi

That sounds like a reasonable course of action. I hate the worrying that comes with noises I can't identify.

i should also say that the bike (09 112CR) has been perfect since I got it back in dec with 500 miles on it. No issues at all. I did have the harness tsb done at the dealer but that was because I rec'd the letter, i never had low voltage problems or any problems for that matter.
This bike is awesome.
I'm really hoping the tech finds a loose stator nut, torques it to a higher value and it'll be done.
*when i refer to 'my hd mech' i mean the dealer*
