I made this statement:

In fact, you can remove the original cartrIdge as one piece without compressing the spring. Loosen the fork cap and the retaining bolt at the bottom of the fork and it will come out as one piece.

The above is not correct!!!
Removing the lower retaining bolt with the fork cap intact
will release the spring preload and if not restrained, will launch the cartridge form the fork tube. Do not attempt to do this!!!
