I picked up a 2008 in November and have got about a 1000 miles on it so far. Yesterday I looked down at my rear tire and saw a small slit in the center. I thought I'd probably run over something, but closer inspection reveals there's an area a little bigger than a quarter that looks dry-rotted. Could that be a side-effect from sitting? I haven't talked to the dealer yet to see if they'd do anything, if they'll blame me for doing "something" to have caused it, or if that's considered part of buying an older bike. | ||

I doubt it is dry rot, my 03 Blast had the original tires on it till a month ago. | ||

How many miles? I had some diablos on my Scg and it showed a line like that just before the cords started to show. | ||

The tire is a Pirelli with 950 miles. The ex got the camera and I haven't taken time to get another yet. Here's the cell phone pic (looks better than I expected or I'd have posted it the first time):  | ||

No worries... try this. Wash that tire real nice and take a good look at it again and see if the rubber feels brittle. Usually when tires dry rot they sluff or "dust" rubber. As in you can take your finger and rub it gently and the tire will crumble away. It MIGHT be from sitting on that one spot. I'd clean the tires and see how it looks again but your tire is in great shape otherwise. If it continues to bother you see your dealer and ask them about it. They normally don't cover tires through warranty though unless you got the road hazard deal. | ||

I would say that is from a rear wheel lock up. Not a bad one but a hurry stop for sure. I would'nt worry about it much. | ||

If it were dry rot you would normally see it at the base of the tread. little cracks is all but not good. In your case, I would check to see if there is a split forming. Tough to tell from your picture. I'm sure Pirelli will supply a replacement if the tire is starting to fail. No harm in getting it checked, but could be if not! | ||

Thanks, guys. I rubbed it pretty good - the white dust on the tire in the pic is what I had on my hands at the time I noticed it. I't's not dry, but has that checkerboard pattern you get with dry rot. Hopefully I can hit the dealer later this week. No lock-ups by me, but I can safely say the HD mechanic was flogging it pretty good on a checkout. I'll post what I get as a response from the dealer. | ||
