I always use the Kill switch in the recommended sequence, i.e. kill switch off, key off. I leave the bike untouched for up to 7 days at a stretch. I do not use a Battery Tender. My battery has never discharged.

More telling is, are there those who don't use the kill switch before key off who have never had a battery discharge? If so, how long does the bike sit unridden?

C4bird, I take it also that the 7.67 amps was on a cold bike without the fans running?

Most of the time I use the kill button before the key but not always.

I once didn't ride my 1125 for two weeks but did measure the battery voltage every day. Started fine at that time but I guesstmated from the daily voltage drop that another week might be pushing it.
That was way to long to not be riding in good weather as it was!

Unibear, that is partially correct, bike was hot, but fans where not on, engine was not running (so battery was hot as well, 50 mile ride just before testing).

Forgot to mention this above, but voltage was 12.79.

I've left my bike sit for over ten days on two different out of town trips...started right up both times after returning.

While I agree with the kill button form of shutting down theory as safer, I have only used the key to shut down my 11...and cannot tie the two electrically as any cause to an electrical drain. Just my opinion though as mine seems fine.

Never a tender/charger since new in Jan.

Never use the security system.

I have added three+ amps worth of loads.

Only use high beams when on very dark roads, rare...and never in the day except to flash at oncoming/unknown turning cars or to pass.

Build date/Dec 07 and now at 3k+ miles in the heat...central Florida.

Knock on wood but never a dead battery.

Ask your dealer to call Buell, there's an ECM flash download that will be available this week to fix the battery draining problem.

Trw,

assuming the battery was fully charged at the time you left it Fri afternoon, it would take approx. .22 amp draw to kill it.

easy to conclude that possibly you had the .14 amp draw and the battery was a bit low to start with. (although, your battery would have to have been down to only 62% capacity for the .14 amps to drain it in 53 hrs.)

hard to tell after the fact.

i would charge the battery completely and do the draw tests as performed above.

i am going to do that on my Uly just to be safe. although, i always kill with the "switch" and then turn the key off.

Here is my follow up....

I had parked it last Thursday evening after getting home from work.
Last night, Monday evening, 4 full days of sitting....FIRED RIGHT UP!

...I had the ignition in the "locked" position....and I still did NOT use the "kill" switch to shut it down.

So...it appears that the "new" ECM that BMC sent my servicing dealership did make the difference.

I would recommend that EVERY 1125R owner get their ECM "flashed" or replaced. ESPECIALLY since right after mine being replaced, there is now a "flash" update supposedly available....coincidence? I think not....but what do I know?

OH YEAH....MINE IS RESOLVED

My Dealer's service manager said he spoke with someone at Buell: "it reprograms the ECM for when the fans turn on or shut off. It's the fix for the charging system problems"

Really what he means is the 'dead battery' problem. There's nothing wrong with the charging system. And I think there's more to it than just changing when the fan's come on and turn off.

From what I've seen on mine there's a current draw when the bike is off that is 'a little more than desirable to maintain a charged battery'.
Just disconnect the neg. battery cable with everything off and check out the arc when you connect it ( i know, that's an old school unscientific method of measurement, but I was tought year's ago that is a good way to tell if you have a substantial draw on the battery).

said the flash update will be available this week.

>>>said the flash update will be available this week.

That is an accurate statement.

In addition Buell is poised to launch a WORP or Whining Owner Reprogramming Protocol. In an unprecedented move Buell is actually going to upload genetic code to alter the behavioral characteristics of certain owners.

Initially a broader, more aggressive program was envisioned that would have alleviated certain behaviors while simultaneously correcting certain physically unattractive features and habits. It was theorized that all Buell owners could be well behaved, wise, cultured and good looking.

Subsequent research and testing culminated in a nasty incident with pink panties over leathers that quickly got the more aggressive program shelved, leaving some things to natural selection and evolution.

Starting in the next month and continuing through Homecoming X25 certain owners are subject to reflashing to ensure they are fully compatible with their finely engineered Buell motorcycles.

The exact date of the reprogramming is being held in abeyance pending the resolution of a touchy problem with where to attach the cable.

This concludes transmission Z45u5.

Court, the latest update on the Buell Dealer Net site says they have figured our how to attach the cable and since the update only take a few seconds it will be foolproof. I cannot give details BUT if you wish to avoid the update I would beware of attractive women who invite you home. You will have a really good time BUT you will not be the same after the update.

Thanks for the update. My battery seems to discharge much quicker than when it was new.

For a while it helped to attach a trickle charger. . . . but even that ain't working like it used to.

Will the dealer protocol include a helpful video? I've found that sometimes a video can provide a rapid recharge.

This is valuable information.

I can't stop laughing!

Well, I'm scared now. I won't set foot in a service department ever again. I will turn off all bluetooth and wireless devices wherever I am and make sure to wear an aluminum foil hat at all times! Just to be sure that my BCU (Biological Control Unit) won't get messed with.

I'm moving to Montana, yeah, that's it! I think it is safe up there.

Might even grow me some dental floss.

ok, maybe I need the BCU upload after all)

Sleez-
I rode the bike everyday that week. So the battery was charged.

Court- Do people not have a right to complain when they spend Thousands of dollars on a product that has multiple issues and no one seems to have a clue. This ain't just one bike, its several. Its an issue that should have been addressed before production. Makes you wonder about the R&D that really went into the bike. Don't get me wrong I love the bike and will standby and try to be patient for a solution, But I should not have to hook a tender up every time the bike may sit for a couple of days. Nor should I have to ride a brand new bike that feels like I hit a 2x4 laying in the road around certain RPM's. I just want to ride man!

i would have to agree with blake on that one.

there are many things that influence the state of the battery. i was just stating a bit of a disclaimer, your battery could be defective, the charging system may be suspect, the cables could be questionable....too many things are possible!

but assuming all is well otherwise...you either have the phantom draw or something else is amiss!

I checked the charging system with my multi meter while idling it showed over 14 volts. The week prior I checked the voltage every morning and the lowest I had was 12.76v highest was 12.9v. It varied day to day. Given the climate change has been so drastic lately temp wise. I Assumed that could cause a slight drop.

Pretty insulting if you ask me. Remember ALL of the owners are supporting BMC by spending $12 large on this bike. ALL of the owners have taken this giant step right along with BMC. One would think that someone who obviously revers BMC would have a little more respect for those owners who support BMC with their wallet.

Dudes we are teasing you all.

There have been some issues, mighty few in my book, that have impacted a small number of bikes. AND these issues are being addressed by the dealers.

You want to talk about issues, let discuss Gold Wing frames that crack in half and Suzuki tail sections that fall off. Both issues that the manufacturers would not even admit to until well into production.

Buell is not perfect here but nobody else is either.
