The Honda rider must have been desperate for a parking space.

Hey, Pete! How you doin’, young fella?

I'm out here in the tropics on a rock in the Western Pacific called Guam. Just about straight down from you.

The bike is in a basket in Pammy & Wes's storage bin, waiting for me to replenish the coffers so we can do (not try) it one more time. Next go-'round we're gonna start from scratch with a 100% CycleRama torquer. We got a little taste of it with the old engine. The idea is to proceed on the premise that torque is what we should chase rather than horsepower. It is a Buell, right? Torque is what makes 'em fun to ride, right?

The last 88 incher that we built put out a measely 103 hp, but a whopping 109 ft. lbs. and it blew everybody's mind while it lasted... especially Wes's.

Damn! You got me going again. I try not to think about it too much. It get's me all excited, way too soon. I've got a lot more work to do out here before it happens. I've got to get the fishing boat completed, and then go kill a bunch of those slimey little critters first.

Here's a little treatise that gives an idea why it's taking so long to accomplish all this:

You still looking after my old Grizzle-head buddy?

My younger brother test rode a Firebolt XB9R yesterday...said it was the biggest POS he ever rode. I got a chuckle out of it. He claimed it had "no balls", steered heavy, shifted hard, and that the front end got too twitchy throttling out of corners. He also mentioned that the clutch dragged...most likely thanks to poor dealer setup (and probably contributed to the poor shifting).

His ride for the past couple years has been a '03 Honda VFR.

BTW...he also said that my S1 felt much better in all respects...

It's interesting getting input on Buells from import riders.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, we recently had a guy get rid of his 'Busa and buy an XB12.

Dealer setup, stock tires, lack of understanding... The usual suspects...

Great "Before" picture, José. But you've got that corner up there you'll have to go around.

How about the "After" picture?

Rex,

Yes, still have the S3, yes I will battletrax with the VROD. Mid controls are in the plans and I have some other tricks I'm working on to increase ground clearance.

Other than ground clearance, the bike handles better than you would expect. Neutral handling, the bike will go from peg to peg rather quickly for a cruiser. It is everything my Buell is not (REFINED, SMOOTH, POWERFUL). I'm amazed they share even one part they feel so different. They both use 10R12 spark plugs, I think that's the only part they share other than the oil.

Plus as you can see on the pic my knee is actually bent when I stop I'm not on my toes like I am on the S3. Big plus for me.

Crazy deals out there in the other brands markets. Stopped in at a local different-brand shop to just kick a few cruiser tires. They've still got some 2003 and 2004 bikes on the floor. But get this, they also have a delayed rebate program, buy the $6000 bike and get $3000 back in three years, buy the $10000 bike and get $5000 back in three years. Very tempting, but they don't want nothing to do with a Buell, and that's okay with me too.

A local Italian import bike dealer here sold a pristine low mileage race kitted '03XB9R for $5000.

Riding around with kids staring out of back windows at yer bike like it's an ice cream sundae makes ya feel good.

But when that kid's staring at your kid on the back - that there is the cherry on top! : D

Reep,
Yamaha and (Suzuki?), the dealer is in Germantown WI. Don't know if it's a factory offered rebate or a local dealership one.
Email on the way shortly.

Sort of off topic but not entirely ... I have 4 nephews in Iraq at the moment, all youngsters (meaning like under 21) and all volunteers. Here’s what one wrote me last week (BTW, my middle name is Whalin):

------

Uncle Whalin,
Everyday it just becomes more retarded than the day before. To let you understand, and to blow off a little steam and frustration, I will give you the example of today's adventure in idoitville. Like usual, I rolled out of the rack at around 0435 this morning; enough time to get dressed, my gear on, a go to the port-a-shitter in pitch black... yea, it's a bad idea if you need to sit. I get to formation by 0500. After roll call, a Sergeant walks up to me and looks at me with a flashlight and says, "Where is your magazine pouches marine?" I stated that I was never issued them. Then he asks where are my rifle rounds. I show him the magazines of 30 rounds each in my cargo pocket. THEN he continues to ask me why I am not using a magazine pouch. I stated once again, that I was never issued them, only a load bearing vest. Next he asks why "don't you have all 6 magazines," to which I replied I was only given 60 rounds. He continues to quiz everyone I came with and they all give the same answers. Eventually, I get to my post, with a load bearing vest with nothing in it, and start my duty of standing post, which is 8 hours straight of sitting in a 8x8 wood shack, on the edge of base, staring at nothing. Later on the Corporal Of The Guard comes by to bring us food. He asks us why we don't have our camelbacks on. I asked why do we need them if we have a case of 1.5 letter bottles of water with us. He replied because that’s SOP, meaning standard operating procedure. He continued on the ask why we only have 2 magazines. I once again stated that we were only issued 60 rounds for two magazines. He thought REALLY hard, then stated that we should carry the empty ones to so our load bearing vests would be filled, because it's SOP. Now I ask you, what am I going to do with EMPTY magazines!!! THROW them at the enemy!?! Yea, that will work, maybe I’ll hit them in the head from 400 yards! Oh yea, when ever the Corporal of the Guard comes to the post, I’m suppose to challenge him with a password, which in the dark I totally understand, but at 1100 hours in broad daylight when I can plainly see who it is! Yea, I got bitched out for not doing it today. I also read in the SOP book today that while being on post, we are not aloud to bring snacks with us of any kind... meaning that if I had some candy to suck on while I’m there, they could punish me if the wished to do so. Frickin' retarded! Otherwise, the command I am under also proclaimed that all of our unit will wear ALL, including empty magazines, of our gear everywhere while walking around on base... even though no one wears it in any other unit. Walking around you even see people sitting or walking around in nothing but flip flops and PT shorts. The kicker, the officer that made the rule is not even here. He is sitting in his office somewhere in the states. Well, I got to get going, ran out of time. Thanks for letting me rant, it helps. Oh yea, thanks for all the goodies. Miss you.

Dog

First, please thank your nephews for their service for all of us -- stand up guys, every one

Second, after literally laughing out loud, it was good to see that, although helmets, weapons systems, methods of carry, doctrine and training have all moved on from the place they were during the Spanish American War, when Road_Thang and I served, some things, indeed, refuse to change!

Quick question... can anyone recommend a probable local "over the counter" type place that would have really big freaking nitrle o-rings? Like 9 or 12 inch diameter? They don't have to be really thick, just big. I am basically looking for cheap big rubber bands that are fuel and oil resistant and very durable.

Tractor supply places? Plumbing supply houses? Who commonly uses such critters?
