It looks like I'm going to give up on the little Yammie unless the owner wants to buy a new tank and petcock. I took it all apart again and everything was full of gunk. I don't think it's worth it to clean the tank much more since it'll probably start leaking and the petcock leaks too since I've had it apart so many times.

When it does run though it does pretty good.

I found this information and survey on another moto site I visit. This group seems to really want to help manufacturers understand what riders want and why they make the gear choices they do.

"The Gear Up! Project has just put up a short survey to help manufacturers, safety organizations, and the Gear Up! Project to better understand the choices you've made when it comes to safety gear.

With your help, manufacturers will be encouraged to make more of the good looking, comfortable, and safe gear that you'll be most likely to wear.

Please take a couple minutes to fill this out, and, if you're on any other forums, consider encouraging the readers there to fill it out too. The more responses we get the more accurate the data will be.

Thanks in advance."

Hickey,
Thanks, they have some interesting statistics on accidents. I guess it's a good thing I wear a white helmet.

California motorcycle smog test proposal modified by state senate

Thanks to the efforts of thousands of AMA members and other concerned motorcyclists, the sponsor of a proposed California law to require motorcycles to undergo periodic exhaust emissions testing has backed away from the idea.

The measure -- Senate Bill 435 introduced this year by state Sen. Fran Pavley (D-Santa Monica) -- would have required all model year 2000-and-newer on-road motorcycles with engine displacements of more than 280cc to be tested every two years. The motorcycles would have been included in the state Department of Consumer Affairs "smog check" program, which involves testing for unacceptable levels of pollutants in emissions.

"This is an initial victory for California motorcyclists, but we can't let our guard down just yet," said Nick Haris, AMA western states representative. "Senators deserve credit for recognizing how this proposal would have created an added burden for motorcyclists, motorcycle businesses, and the cash-starved state bureaucracy, and they reworked the measure to limit its scope to focus on catalytic converters. The bill is on its way to the state Assembly, but we have to remain vigilant because it could revert back to its original form."

Haris added that, in addition to AMA members, ABATE of California and the California Motorcycle Dealers Association put a lot of effort into changing the proposal.

In addition, at least one senator argued the legislation was expensive, unfair to those who ride motorcycles for recreation, and was ostensibly nothing more than another tax. Political insiders saw the proposal as just a creative way for the cash-strapped state to find more money.

"California's motorcyclists are willing to do their fair share to keep our skies clear, but this bill asked motorcyclists -- whose two wheels are far less of a resource drain than four-wheelers -- to shoulder an extra burden," said Haris. "The California Legislature has already raided $90 million of user-generated fees from the state's OHV fund. Some legislators saw this as an opportunity to create yet another motorcyclist-funded program with no thought as to the burden it placed on the backs of motorcyclists."

California's motorcycle engine emission standards are already the strictest in the nation and, because of their relatively low yearly mileage totals when compared to other vehicles, the state's motorcycles have the lowest emissions of any motor vehicle category in California.

More than 3,000 motorcyclists used AMA Action Alerts to let Sen. Pavley know that they opposed the legislation. They also expressed their concern that the bill could require motorcyclists to always have a stock exhaust system, whereas automobile owners are allowed to install aftermarket systems, which can be less costly.

The emissions testing provision was dropped out of the bill and it cleared the Senate on June 1. The measure is now in the Assembly for consideration, where it could be further amended.

Oldbug, post in the parts wanted section, you might get a bite. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/21/ 1022.html?1244862450

If not, the parts are reasonably priced brand new from the dealer. Firebolts are the most expensive because they have the most plastic, but they sure are cheaper than a typical rice burner. : )

HUH?? WHAT DID YOU SAY?
DON'T FORGET YOUR EARPLUGS!

Motorcycles hazardous to your hearing
Think of your ears next time you go cruising on your motorbike. The roar of
the engine and the wind noise rival the noise of a rock concert or a
chainsaw, and your helmet offers no protection for your ears.

Motorcycles look great but they are not for sensitive ears. A group of
scientists from the University of Florida revved up 33 different motorcycles
and recorded the noise levels. Nearly half of them produced sound levels
above 100 dB.

"Almost all of the motorcycles we tested reached action-level noise,
which in the workplace would require ear protection," stated Joy Colle, an
audiologist and researcher.

The US government’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration
(OSHA) warns that exposure to noise in excess of 100 dB is safe for only 15
minutes.

Wind noise

Wind noise is another potential threat to the hearing of the riders.
One hour at freeway speeds with unprotected hearing can cause permanent
hearing loss.

An OSHA study found that a motorcycle ride at 60 kilometres per hour
(37 miles per hour) with an open helmet and no hearing protection results in
ambient noise levels of 75 to 90 dB, comparable to operating a leaf blower
or lawn mower.

At 100 kilometres per hour (63 miles per hour) sound levels range
between 103 dB and 116 dB. At those highway speeds a drive without hearing
protection should be limited to less than 15 minutes.

Your helmet offers protection against bumps and even crashes but it
does not keep out much of the noise. Studies have indicated that the maximum
noise reduction from wearing a helmet ranges from 3 to 5 dB. An inexpensive
set of earplugs reduces noise exposure by as much as 35 dB, allowing you to
ride all day without the fear of hearing damage.

Yea riding in shortie helmets just ain't worth a hoot. too noisy, too much wind, too much debree hitting you. I'v always worn a full helmet, even in Utah where they are not required or in South Carolina where they are also not required. I just dont feel safe without a full helmet, pluss alot of noise is knocked out along with wind. Just my preference though. For some its just a defiance thing, but thats cool.

IaMike, you can try a radiator shop for a rusted tank. They will clean coat and pressure test. That's what we do anyway. It is better than the Kreem kits by far.

The radiator shop is a great suggestion.

Pammy-
I like the radiator shop idea. Another body shop guy suggested using crystal draino.

Blue Pipe-
No, it's from 1996. Another Badwebber asked about it too and I thought that maybe I had kept that issue but I couldn't find it in my pile I was going to send to the servicemen overseas.

Action Alert!

Information Bulletin Senate Bill 435 (motorcycle emissions testing) will not be heard again during the 2009 legislative session!

California Senate Bill 435 (Pavley, 23rd District, D) is no longer scheduled for a hearing during the 2009 legislative session. The bill has been turned into a 2-year bill by the author and may be brought back up in the 2010 session.

Thanks to all the riders who took the time to contact their representatives. Your voice was heard loud and clear by the state legislature.

I went to Suburban Harley's blockfest yesterday in Theinsville, WI. They had three brand new 2008 1125R's priced at $7,995. If I could kick myself in the teeth I would have. I forked over $9,995 for an '09 XB12Ss. Otherwise, I would've snapped one of these up. I don't know if any are left, but here is their link if anyone is interested: http://www.suburbanharley.com/
