Pretty much, but sometimes you never know who the lurkers are. Besides white tires might fit right in around here come August.

Hey Phillyblast what's up dude? You reply to email or what? There aren't many Buells left anywhere...nevermind Buells in the Philly area. Give me a ping at cdtres@mindspring.com or ctres@alionscience.com

My Friend Joe Peralta is, again running daily reports from Laughlin NV and The town where he lives, Oatman AZ. He is an exceptional writer with a cagey sense of humor. Should be fun to watch how this year's events unfold, after last years disaster.

Joe' web site the Single Cylinder Gazette, www.gazette9.com has numerous articles on the area around Laughlin and Oatman, including some of the best twisty roads I have ever been on. Joe did the first 3000 mile test ride on the Buell Blast, it's a great article, check it out.

He is heading down this morning early to try and get a test ride on the lightning. Will have an update this evening.

Carlos,
sent you a reply last week - sent another a couple of seconds ago, I'm assuming you never got the first one. I got the fresh rubber installed on the S2, ready to get rid of the chicken strips. call me, the phone # is in the email, post if you don't get the email.

Bad day on the Buell.

I go for a quick ride to get some coffee this morning. Come back out turn the gas on and gas starts spewing out from the bottom corner of the cam cover. shut the fuel valve off and it stops. turn it on and more dripping gas. Took a while to start but once it did it stopped. This isn't the first time this has happened. What's going on?

It didn't help that while I was down there looking I noticed my collector mounts for my new Wileyco are broken all the way thru after less than a 600 miles. :(

It's an 02 Cyclone with 6500 miles. Someone tell me this is an easy fix. I'm starting to lose the faith.

Andy,
Is the gas actually coming from the cam cover, or is it running out of the carb and then along the top of the tranny area and then looking like it's coming out of the cam cover?

You might have a stuck ball or something in the carb and it might just need a simple disassemble of the carb or float bowl to fix it. It might even be as simple as a loose or partially detached gas line between the petcock and the carb inlet.

Have a friend hold the bike up verticle and then with a flashlight look in at the carb from the left side of the bike and see if you can identify where the dripping is coming from.

Is the bike still under dealer/factory warranty? If so, how's your dealership service department? If they're any good it should take less than an hour to correct the problem while you wait, if they're one of the not-so-good ones then how are you with a set of tools and do you have a service manual?

Not sure about the WileyCo mounts. Mine held fine for many miles, I haven't put the WileyCo back on yet after my cross-country adventure a few summers ago.

And just a side note, if I had raw gas running out of my bike I don't think I'd try to start it until I identified where it was coming from. Just a thought.

That's what I can't figure out. It's not coming from the carb. I was looking at it while it dripped. The carb and all likes going to it were dry. I just went out and did it again. Turned the gas on and nothing happened it's back to normal.

It has done this about 4 or 5 times since I bought the bike. Usually after I let it sit a while its fine. Once I get going it's fine. Trust me, I'm not exactly looking to go down in flames but I needed to go and I knew from previous experience once I got going it would stop.

I have an extended warranty on the bike but I would like to know what's going on before I take it in. If they can't duplicate or find the problem it doesn't really get me anywhere. Maybe someone else here has had the same problem and can tell me the possible cause/solution before I head into the shop.

Mista,
Where under the cam cover? The carb overflow exits down there. Maybe you've got a sticking float.

Andy,

It's likely has a piece of dirt, or plastic is stuck in the float needle port. (it will stop the needle from closing the port completely) Take the float bowl off, and remove the gas line from the pet cock, and blow some air through it, (the hose still connected to the carb) and at the same time lift, and lower the float bowl to see if it closes off the flow completely. You can use your breath to do this. If it still leaks with the float all the way up, you likely have something in there, and will have to take the float off, and then rinse or blow through the hose to clear it. Compressed air will work nicely, but be sure you do not loose the needle valve when you take it apart. You can replace the needle at the local HD shop, if it shows signs of wear.

make sure you do not readjust the tab that holds the float on, as this will change your float level. Also put the pin back in the same way it comes out, it should come out easy, or you are pressing it the wrong way. If you put it in backwards, you will break the carb.

Buy the manual, and it will show you how, or take it to someone that knows how to do this procedure.

It is easiest to take the carb off the bike when you do this, and be sure to buy new Allen head screws, of aprox the same length as the ones you take off the float bowl, as the ones you take off will be cheep crap, and you will mess them up if you try to put them back in. When you put the carb back on, make sure it fits tight and easily into the manifold, and that the manifold has not come loose from the heads, or you will run lean, and fry your motor!

Good Luck,
Barry

Andy: Sounds like a stuck float or a piece of grit in the float valve. I'd bet the gas you're seeing is coming out of the overflow tube from the carb.

Before you take anything apart, try giving the float bowl a few good raps with a screwdriver handle or plastic hammer-nothing that will damage the metal. Sometimes that's enough to pop a stuck float loose.

that's where the carb overflow is routed (or was on my M2 when stock) . . . . . all the advice ya got was good, but I'd try following road_thing's first, as is non-invasive and cheap . . . . .

What I used to do on my van that I got rid of to clear the A/C drain tube was to blow backwards thru the tube to clear the debris from the condensation box. Looked kind of weird to see me cranking my head up behind the right front fender well, but it worked. Would this work on an M2? Just a thought.
If this sounds too weird just mentally edit MikeJ to Anonymous. ;)

Another thing that can cause it is a pressurized gas tank. Next time it's doing it, pop the gas cap loose and see what happens. If it stops, look for a pinched vent line or a defective tip-over valve.

Aaron-That's the first thing I did since I filled up right before it happened. It still kept leaking.

I'm thinking it must be a stuck float or a piece of grit in the float valve since I just went out and started it up now and it's fine.

Thanks everyone, for giving me peace of mind I was worried for a minute there. It seems like a really simple thing and now I know.

Once again this board has been a tremendous help.

I guess I was a little overconfident after singing its praises to my fellow riders after a flawless performance on a several hundred mile trip to the beach last week. I need to glare at it suspiciously a little more often now. Maybe then it will keep "behaving" :)

Not long ago I went by Glendale Buell for a BRAG event. About 4 blocks from the dealership my S2 quit running. I instinctively looked down at the bike to say "huh?" and I saw fuel gushing out of the stock hamcan onto the hot exhaust. Hello! What have we here?

I shut off the fuel and pushed the bike to the side of the road and waited for the gusher to subside.

I wiped up the spilled fuel as best I could, left the fuel turned off, started up the bike and had just enough fuel in the bowl to ride to the Dealership.

Of course, after a thorough clean-up at the Dealership the bike would NOT leak a drop!

The mechanic who peeked at my bike said he had seen stuck floats act similarly before. He said if it happens again 1) shut off the fuel, 2) clean the spilled fuel from the bike and 3) start the bike with the fuel off and let it idle until all fuel is burned from the bowl. He said that usually will allow the float to drop back to it's normal position.

It worked for me.

PS. I was riding with a friend at the time. We were horsing around a bit, accelerating rapidly from a stop sign only to have to slow rapidly for the next one. I suspect that the exaggerated acceleration then deceleration probably caused the float to stick on something. No proof other than it has never happened before or since.

Andy, on my 01 M-2, I had the same problem the day I picked it up. I got the brand new bike out of the parking lot to the stop light, when waammoo, it stoped running, gas gushing from same general area as on yours. luckly it was down hill back to the dealership, after only like 15 minutes all was fine, turned out the float was stuck, not sure how, and was a simple fix. They would not let me back to the shop area to watch them tweek on it, so cannot say how exactly they fixed it, but no problems for the past 2 years and 9,000 miles..

Andy,
If you overfill the tank on a warm day fuel expansion could cause the same symptoms.

I was riding my M2 on Rt 301 on the Eastern Shore of MD the other morning when I decided to flog the beast. I got up to about 120MPH when the engine started to sputter and bog down. At first I thought I'd hit the rev limiter but after that I had a very hard time maintaining any kinda revs or speed. When the tractor trailers started catching up with me, I decided to pull over lest I become the next Harry Chapin (how many of you are gonna get that one?). I let the engine idle on the shoulder of the road and started looking around for fluids spewing or things missing but nothing...everything was still bolted down and tight. Theory from one or two armchair Buell techs was that the venting was somehow overwhelmed by the flow of fuel and somehow vaccuum inside the tank blocked the fuel flow.

Whattaya all think? What is the remedial action so that this never happens again?

To test the tank theory, pop the cap the next time it happens.

Harry Chapin Killed in Auto Accident
Rolling Stone August, 1981
Submitted to the archive by Nina Peterson

As this issue of Rolling Stone was going to press, Harry Chapin was killed in a collision on New York's Long Island Expressway. The accident occurred at 12:27 p.m. on July 16th as Chapin, 38, was driving from his home in Huntington Bay, Long Island, where he lived with his wife and five children, to an appointment in Manhattan. Apparently, he was trying to change lanes when his blue 1975 Volkswagen Rabbit was hit from behind by a tractor-trailer. Spokesmen at Nassau County Medical Center said Chapin died from a massive heart attack, but they were not sure whether it occurred before or after the accident. A gold pocket watch found on the body was the only initial means of identification.

Yeah Josh but did you know that or did you do a quick Google search? :D

I will try the tank cap trick.

What is the permanent solution to this though?

BTW the other theory was that Harry's VW Rabbit suddenly decelerated and that caused the rear end collision...maybe Erik designed the tank venting on that car, too :D

I had to check the spelling of Nina's last name but knew the rest yeah right

I'm willing to bet Buell used an off-the shelf vent and didn't design their own.

The recall vent is supposed to fix it. If you have the recall vent, you could take it apart and try to see what the problem is.

Also be sure to check the vent line. If the vent is fine but the hose is pinched you'd have the same problem.
