1983 Harley-Davidson Ironhead Sportster

You’re looking at a 1983 Ironhead Sportster that has been shared between father and son over the past 4 years. My father purchased an upgrade Sportster and I have been riding the my Buell way more than this bike deserves. So it looks as though it is time for this beautiful bike to go to someone who would ride it hard and enjoy every minute of it.

The Good

The bike starts and runs good with the all finer aspects of the Ironhead family of motors. The bike tracks good down the road and gets a lot of looks even from the hardcore crowd. This sportster just looks the part of that old school classic ride. It has the standard chrome straights and the mini apes with center controls and road pegs to give you that stretched out ride. It has just the Speedo and your ears for the tach. With the black on black paint and the chrome accents it really looks good. To help keep that old skool look we added hot rod blinkers for the rear and a circle air cleaner. It has the spoked mag wheels non-tube for the long road trips. I have a LePara Solo seat on there now, but the original 70’s style king and queen two up seat and sissy bar will go with the bike. I just installed a set of cushion grips for better feel and control. It has shorty mirrors installed and fresh oil change. We put a new tire on it about 3 months ago with only 300 miles on it since. The bike will run down the highway all day long at 75-85 blowing the phones and coffee cups out of the cagers hands. I get some people that will just stare at me when I am running side by side with them waiting for me to go past so they can resume their conversation. LOL, I do miss that part of riding this bike. Lastly, I just got he sporty out of the shop (Denton County Choppers, Frisco TX) and I paid over $700 for the following…

New Chain, New rear and front sprocket, New ignition system (DynaTech 40,000 volt) to include coil, plugs, wires and solid state pickup. The VOES on this year model is now bypassed by the installation of this kit. I also had the Carb completely rebuilt and a new carb bracket installed.

The bike starts up with two wicks of the throttle. Needless to say I am very pleased with their work and more than a little sad to part with the now VERY VERY Good running Ironhead sportsters.

The Bad

The gaskets on the Cam side lower primary to seep some oil at speeds above 75mph.. If you know how these ironhead engines were made they usually had constant leaks from the engine as they gaskets were not made out of metal and with the difference in metals between the case and cylinder heads the metals flexed as they heated and cooled causing them to leak. There are gaskets sets readily available for around $40-$50. The fork seals are just starting to weep. The front brakes are grabby; under hard braking all is good. If you brake slowly with the front it will grab sometimes. I think the calipers need to be cleaned out and the fluid flush as they recommend it yearly. I simply have not been riding her enough to give it any attention this year. I have a clear Texas Title in hand and current registration. Please let me know if I can answer any more of your questions….
