In process of replacing the rear sprocket and putting on a new belt. Done this many times over the years. However, I never replaced the front sprocket and I am thinking this might be worn to the point that is was the cause of my last belt breaking. Is there a minimal number of miles at which time this is usually replaced? My question: If I remove the bolts that hold the plate on the front sprocket, will the sprocket slide off or do I have to remove the nut also? As always, your wisdom is greatly appreciated.

Hi Maggie! You need a tool to hold the sprocket while you are removing the BIG sprocket nut. Basicly it bolts to the engine case on one of the front pully shroud bolts and wedges in one of the teeth to hold it still so you can get the big nut off and torque it back on. After saying that...the pully is probably not going to wear out....probably. If you wrap a new belt around the old front pulley and there is a great amount of chucking that you are uncomfortable with, you will probably want to change it, saying that the larger Buells and the belted H-Ds have belt tensions that you can play music with and I have not heard of the front pulley as a wear item. |

The front pulley is also iron or steel, so it shouldn't really be a wear item. |

Thanks guys. Went ahead and just put new belt and rear sprocket on. Sounds like I really don't have to worry too much about front pulley. If I break another belt, well then, will re-address the issue. Swampy - how ya doin'? I would appreciate it if you would shut the door. Somebody left it open and all that cold northern air is shootin right through and down south. My ride to Daytona in the morning (gotta be on the road by 7 AM) will have me riding in the 30's. Now I know I should not complain, but heck, I panic in temps under 70! Blast is still on the mend, did not get it all put pack together yet, so will be on the Vulcan, the Blast is better in the cooler air but either way, wish I had that heated gear... |

Try wool socks, I wear them in the summer as well as in the winter. I just found some 85% wool Carhart socks at Dunhams Sporting Goods last night! |

I tried wearing wool socks to ride in the summer here in Florida but they just look ridiculous with my kevlar flip flops, shorts & wife beater! Chris C |

Heated gear? My Bilt Typhoon overpants and FirstGear Diablo jacket keep me plenty warm even in 30º weather. Who needs heated gear? |

Those of us with back and neck injuries do. Less bulk, more warmth......and I've paid my cold weather dues without the luxury of heated gear! |
