BTW, Blake, you should buy that e-bayed M2. Wow! And look at all those extras! I'll bet the new bike he was given to race is a bolt. On a positive note, I now see how to properly mount the belly pan. I thought the muffler was supposed to fit inside it. According to those M2 pics, it does not. Hey Marty! Was that also the case with your belly pan? Bob

Bob,

Glad you made it home okay.

Yes, OHR is closed until further notice. Kinda silly. They ran cart races all weekend, then after the fact decide a couple motorcycles are going to significantly exacerbate the problem. The racing line in turns two and eight is in pretty bad shape. It's been in bad shape since the second race of the season back in April. And the new pavement had been crumbling and coming up since the first race back in February.

I would have gladly agreed to put up some cones to move the line outside of the problematic area. Oh well. Better to wait until it cools off some anyway. I talked to Darryl on Sunday. Unfortunately the other party with interest in the track had already decreed its shutdown.

The CMRA, who paid for the new asphalt pulled a real boner in going with one of the cheapest pavement mixes available. I also think it was a mistake to have it layed down during the winter. Asphalt seems to cure to a much better integrity when layed down in the heat. The CMRA should have had a professional write a specification outlining the requirements for the new pavement. Sounds like that's what they are doing now for the patching and "Rhino" surface treatment.

Let's plan on a session as soon as the track reopens, supposedly within 4 to 6 weeks. Then maybe Blacksix will have a bike and join us.

Actually, turn 8's problem area isn't a particular line, it's the whole middle of the turn. Pieces are being broken off of the apex (early, mid and late) and the shrapnel is being sprayed to the entire exit of the turn. I swept my ass off on July 7. Got a free T for the effort too. Don't know about turn 2. Yep, the surface did look cheap, like they didn't even steamroll it.
I believe Shogun Motorsports in Dallas was a major contributor to the repaving and I hear the're pretty pissed. The surface is too new. Perhaps they should have broken up the old stuff, carted it away and relaid a complete new surface instead of applying a veneer. I think I saw 3 layers and a concrete base. Motorsport Ranch isn't the typical blacktop, it has aluminum (oxide?)in it's composition from what I heard. They say it makes for higher track temps and race tires heat up real quick. Don't know how much truth there is in the aluminum being there. I personally didn't see it because I wasn't trying to get "that close" of a look that day. It's a top notch track tho.
So did Darryl say that the track was unsafe period or did he just shut it down because of a certain party's recommendation? I can't imagine it being any worse than on the 7th. All they need to do is close the track every couple hours and let us sweep up real good. Or maybe it's a danger because the track is unsupervised when they're not racing, meaning no medics available?

I talked to John today and got some details on my soon to be M2 racebike:
SE Coil
SE 8000 RPM Ignition
2002 Buell Crank
SE Cams - likely 536
Zippers pushrods, tubes and lifter blocks
SE Roller rockers
Titanium Valves
Ported Heads
Bronze valve guides - no seals
pro stock springs?
Ross & Wiseco forged pistons ~11.5 or 13.0:1
.010 overbore
No charging system
Dynoed at 96.7 HP

I will add my race exhaust and air filter

Chassis mods too numerous to list yet.

I'll let you know when I find out more, especially once I have taken it to Blackhawk farms.

Blake, the cmra board seems to be quite active lately. Censorship in the form of revoking race priveleges and posting priveleges? Cripes. I shoulda banned from badweb the minute I signed up! But racing? That's going too far. Kevlar panties Blake? Maybe you should move that post to the apparel topic in badweb's KV. hehe Yeah, they should lighten up over there. BTW, even tho I signed up I can't post there. I show as being logged in. Can't contact anyone to find out why either. Any ideas?

Not that I would ever call Mr Duga at home, but posting his home phone is a shining example of me being a candidate for ceensorship. Call me the unthinking, highly over worked engineer. Maybe I'd call him for a thank you beer if I'm up there. Yep, he's been real good at getting back to me. Can't say how busy a guy he really is as Court says. I'm sure those Budweiser girls at the races occupy the vast majority of his time. :) When is the cmra gonna get Bud girls? Even better, St. Pauli girls?!

I finally ordered the Buell race kit (header, muffler, ecm and filter kit). I would have preferred the D&D can but even tho it was a smaller diameter, it was 4" longer. Wouldn't fit in the pan. Can't wait to get it. Without it I'd be really easy to lap.

"Without it I'd be really easy to lap. "

Somehow I doubt that. Passing anyone on OHR takes a lot of courage. Sounds like the Rhino coat is going to be a great deal. Just wish they could get it done sooner.

Make sure they calibrate/reset your new ECM for TPS voltage at throttle fully closed.

You are a paid up full CMRA member and they won't let you post? Send Brooks an email asking him to get you access to post. He's a good guy, kind of abrasive at times, but a definite good guy. His email is... heck I can't find it. I'll dig it up and post it in a minute.

From what i could tell, when I registered and filled out the profile, they were supposed to check it out then reply back saying "yer cool, we'll let u in." Never got one of those. Maybe they're scared of a Bueller taking over!
I tried searching on the rhino to learn more but all I got was hunting excursions to africa and school trips to the zoo!

Dave, that M2 is the deal of the deacde in my book. Prep work and fitment of plastic and such had been frustrating for me and costly. The extra money put into lower bars, rearsets, ac, ecm and exhaust system and plastic easily turned into 2k. And I still wont have the 96.7 HP you will have. I still can't put my pan on until the Buell race header and can comes in. Good luck with it.

Here's more cmra info. Blake, did you say it was 50 bucks to practice at OHR? I didn't realize that Am and Ex practiced separately and in sessions or does OHR throw this out the window? Judging by the fee schedule, we need to endurance race, it's cheaper than the sprints. Obvoiusly there's a lot more going on than I'm aware of.

OHR track rental is not an official CMRA practice. If enough racers show up a rythm usually develops where the fast guys wait for the turtles to finish and vice versa. No formal structure and since there are usually only a handful of bikes, you pretty much feel like you have the track to yourself. Keep in mind, no ambulance, no corner workers. Still, can't beat it for $50 for an entire day of burning up the track. One more thing you will need, racing tires. I was stubborn and waited until my D205's were nearly toast. No comparison. The Metzler Rensports are awesome, as I'm sure are the racing rubber of other reputable brands. One thing, I had no choice but to mount a 180/55-17 on the rear. It does get squeezed by the 5" wide rim where it really wants to be mounted on a 5-1/2" wide rim. Handling wise the slightly oversize tire shows no ill effects, at least compared to 170/60-17 street tires. It is just kind of frustrating to not be able to wear them all the way to the edge.

Turns out the reason my X1 race kit isn't in my hands is because it's backordered from the factory. So I'm scheduled to cornerwork TWS instead. Hmmm...no race bike, the Pig is down, so is my Jeep. Looks like the mountainbike is going to be getting some use, despite the heat. Wait a tick! Maybe I can race Brooks on the mountain bike! Do you think I'll get an unlimited displacement advantage on my no cylinder bike? Or a 6 lap lead?

okay biggest issue with people not being able to post is lack of being able to "log-on" Check to see that you have permission granted always in security settings for www.ezboard.com this will allow you to have higher security settings for normal web use but able to log onto message board.

I couldn't even find security settings there. It's not in my profile. So I tried to re register and got this:

This seems to be the problem. Perhaps they are waiting for my criminal records to show up! hehe

Race kit arrived?! WOOOOOOHOOOOO!

OHR will be ready for action soon. I told the "Dawg" of ATC fame to get his CMRA membership, so we could have another Bueller to dice with. Not sure he followed through though. He could have taken the school this past Saturday morning at TWS.

I'll give it a go.
Lots of prov ams running sprints Sunday. I mean lots! One squid on a duc. I mean, the guy can ride fast and handle himself on his own but in a pack he was putting everyone else at risk, trying to pass on the inside, cutting everyone off in the straights and turns, and touching tires. He was reported but I kept seeing him run throughout the day. Maybe the experts could have put up with it with their experience but the other yellow shirts were scared shitless. That said I might have a large leather squid picture sewn to the back of my leathers. That should give me some breathing room of my own! Lots of carnage throughout the day. The speed is so high there. Gotta watch the entry speeds. Musta been 50 wipeouts. A few took the white taxi outta there.

Man, that is one of the reasons I'm so hesitant to actually enter a race. I'm not sure I could contain my anger if some squid pulled a foolish move and caused me to crash out.

Maybe we can team up at OHR. LOL.

You gotta enter to get the full race license. Once you survive 2, you can just pay your dues every year and still get to play at OHR. Just gotta get it over with.
Yep, the bad news is that the squid doesn't have to furnish proof of insurace so you can get your bike fixed. Privateering will break your bank. One guy I talked to said he spent 5k on tires last season. At 400 bucks for a set of slicks that last 1/2 a weekend of racing plus running the slicks in practice times 12 race dates per year, that's believable. I think I'll stick to the DOTs. Should be quite a bit more life in them.
There's an AM on a blue SV with MX number plates attached. Comparing his SV to the others, it's obvious he's on a budget too. He usually finishes just ahead of the last lightweight GP to cross the line. I'd say it looks like he's concentrating on picking his lines, form and technique. Probably doesn't have the opportunity to practice between races, or have the cash for the 1k shock and 400 buck slicks. But at least he's safe and the speed will increase over time. I'm in the same boat so I might be able to give him a run for his money. :]
Team up at OHR? Sure. We'll call ourselves" Team Calamari!"

"I think I'll stick to the DOTs. Should be quite a bit more life in them."

Actually a set of race compound DOT's will be the likely best value. I was like you and insisted on going the budget route and using my street tires on the track. They wore out very quickly and just didn't have the grip you need on the track. Whenever I'd ask for tips to help me get around the track faster, everyone without hesitation would tell me to get race compound tires. They were 200% correct. Instead of fighting a slippery rear end trying to break 1:43 at OHR, within five laps on Rensports I was down to a 1:36 and was fighting a scraping muffler. The muffler won by the way. ohwell

I understand though; if you are like me, you'll have to find out for yourself. Once you learn the track and get tired of big ole dorky me lapping you, you'll spring for a set of race treads... :D and probably Nallinization too. After all, it's only money.

It's here, it's here, it's here, it's here!! I left work early to pick it and was so psyched that I drove it home - no lights, no charging system, racing tires, etc. I don't think that I will be able to wait until next year to get my racing license and go to the track. Needless to say it was very cool driving it home. The TZ tail section makes for a perfect seating position. I didn't even get pulled over. Now I gotta go play...talk more later.

Looking to race, at a novice and relatively uncompetetive level, my 2000 X1. I understand most of the stuff I need to do/get, but have some questions about other things.

1. Is it necessary to convert to the 2 disk setup? I already boiled my brake fluid once at a track day; is it a relatively frequent occurence? It cold have been old fluid (2 years) I guess...

2. Should I change to chain drive? The conversion didn't seem too expesive at ASB - was I missing something?

3. How does one put numbers on the back of an X1 without getting a whole new tail section?

4. Are there frame sliders or equivilent out there?

5. Can the X1 be speed shifted? I have always been nervous about treating a harley transmission like a japanese one so I have never tried. Any experience?

Thanks
Randy

Randy: answers to questions in order.
1. One disc is enough. The bike already stops quick enough to throw you. Adding the extra stopping power of another disc would probably decrease brake modulation.
2. Chains aren't necessary unless you are putting out gargantuan power or wish to change gearing for different types of tracks.
3. Get motocross rectangular number plates from the local dirt shop.
4. Don't know this answer. Might want to call Henry Duga.
5. Yes, it seems to shift quite well with out the clutch. But beware...the Buell puts out more low and midrange torque and it would be possible to mae the tire slip at an inopportune moment, most likely when down shifting. Locking the rear tire on a circuit could be catastrophic to rider and bike...and other riders.

Much has transpired in my personal and professional life in the past few weeks. I regret to inform you that racing is now officially out of the question for me. One, I will be traveling extensively to Korea, Vietnam and Pakistan. I will probably be there over half of the year. Two, there is even a possibility of me moving to Korea for at least a year. I could quit if that's what it came down to, but I am an avid explorer and am welcoming the chance to get the hell out of Texas. More of the picture will come together in the next few weeks.
That in mind, I'm going to just go ahead sell my leathers, helmet, belly pan and flyscreen. All the other stuff is on the X1 already, the Xroads bars and LSL rearsets, race ECN (un-zeroed), race header and can and K&N. I'll get a pic of the suit and helmet soon and post in the for sale area. If I end up moving, I'll probably sell the X1 as well, which would be a shame because I haven't had the chance to touch it other than to take it apart to prep it for the track. Now, I'll have to put it back together. I'll lose big on that one, I can tell already. I'll still be around long enough for Bonneville.

That sucks! Wanna donate your belly pan and race can to the BadWeB roadracing team? :]

After a year in Korea, you may never want to leave Texas again.

Actually, you really ought to keep the race bike intact. Oak Hill track days for $50 a day are just WAY too fun to pass up. They have supposedly patched the asphalt and are planning on a work day to apply the Rhino Coat. We should be able to hit the track as often as we want all fall/winter.
