I'm in need of a new battery. No lithium, but want to go AGM. What are your recommendations? Looking for the usual qualities of value, fitment and longevity.

Can't go wrong with YUASA brand.
I got over 7 years out of one after the OEM battery crapped out in less than 2 years...

Thanks gents, I'll need to look into both. I think I prematurely killed an otherwise good battery from Deka by keeping it on the trickle charger; the OEM didn't last for me either. Most recently, the Costco bought Interstate was a dud from the get-go; I got my money back, they stopped selling them after having too many similar reports. Thus my search for a new one.

trickle chargers...

What i have learned through my years is that trickle chargers, even the automatic ones of good brands sometimes like to stick in charge mode and fry good batteries. Saying that, all my bikes stay plugged into trickle chargers now. However, the chargers are plugged into my christmas light timers so that they only turn on for 30 minutes a day from 430am to 5am (the coldest part of the day here). This ensures whatever bike I jump on at 530 am has a freshly topped off and warmed up battery, and is ready to go for my hour long commute.
My motorcycle batteries tend to last well beyond 4 years even in my buells. When I was on deployment, I left the battery in the bikes on the trickle timer and came back with no battery problems what so ever.

So to summarize, i love trickle chargers, but only let them work for 30 minutes at a time just in case they malfunction, 30 minutes shouldn't be long enough on my 1 amp chargers to fry the batteries.

I've been using Battery Tender brand wall wart chargers for 18 years. Never had a battery get cooked.
MV Agusta supplied one with my '16 Turismo, it even had a MV factory pigtail to connect it to the bike.

But connecting one to a wallwart timer is a good idea.
I knew that throwing away the timer I'd need it some day!

I have never had one fry either, but have had buddies that did. Putting on a timer is cheap insurance.

I am debating on trying out the lithium for the extra cranking amps, but have also been contemplating a 2nd battery, or possibly making a custom tray for a larger battery. But that is just me being retarded because I don't like the slow cranking as the starter works past the compression.

Before I went with the NoCo lithium, I was a Yuasa guy.

But the '08 killed my last one in two years, even with routine battery maintainer-ing. Hence the switch to lithium.

I originally said that I wasn't looking at lithium, now I'm contemplating it. Maybe the NoCo is worth the extra 50 clams over the first recommendation which I almost pulled the trigger on; alright, adding one to my cart, maybe it will go on sale come holiday season.

Here's the one I was looking at even before checking on this post. Synchronicity at work it appears.

Also, the NoCo has a 5-year limited warranty.

The one my brother used and sent back was only 2 Ah. I see the NoCo is 4 Ah. That might work, his would pull down under 5 amps and he'd lose his clock and trip meters.

I can not attest to the NOCO batteries yet, but have nothing but praise for their chargers and jump packs. I currently use a NOCO-1 tender that will charge all to include lithium-ion, and ran their jump packs during my rollback days. good stuff

The Ah ratings have my eyebrows raised! My Noco GB40 genius BOOST, jump packs, are rated at 2.15 Ah, and are supposed to put out at 1000 Amps. Good for 20 jump starts each. 2 or 4 Ah does not compare well against the 12 Ah + of the OEM lead acid batteries. That 4 Ah could vaporize quickly in the cold.

It always started the bike, it just had no back up to keep the odo alive while doing it. The company admitted it was not a good choice for a Harley. Guess they didn't know a Buell was harder to turn over than a Harley!

I'm still working on a battery for camping when I ride during the day and can't recharge the battery for my CPAP with the solar panel. I need extra Ah capacity. So, my mind came to a screeching halt when I saw the low capacity. Sorry, carry on.

I ordered a new battery from Renegade. Thanks for the advice FTD. I'll let you all know how I like it.

Actually, the factory HD AGM battery is pretty decent. If you want a battery on the cheap, Amazon has all kinds. I've tried cheap batteries a few times, the battery terminals would break after awhile when least expected, then have no start
or no run depending when the terminal broke. Never had that happen with the HD battery.

I bought a Shorai lithium battery based upon a review from another Ulysses owner and it's been great. I also bought the Shorai charger for it. Just actually bought another Shorai battery, this one for my Beta dual sport.

I've used HD AGMs forever. Combined with regular tender use (either Battery Tender Jr, or now, I use NoCo charger/tenders that can bring them back from stone-dead), I routinely get 6-7 years per battery.

My 1125CR, for example, has had 2 batteries in it ever. Factory, and the current one. 2009-2023.

I think I put my third battery total (second replacement plus OEM) in my '06 Uly, this past winter. I know I wounded it when my stator went dead, so I wasn't surprised - my voltmeter was showing a single green instead of two for most of a year, and I rode it that way for most of a season before it flat refused to start on me. Had it on a tender while I replaced the stator, and it wouldn't take a charge at all. Replaced. The replacement before that, was when my OEM regulator died and that wounded the battery that time - I replaced it with the Shindengen and no problems till the stator quit (it may also have been wounded when the regulator died, and just clung to life until last year out of stubbornness).

Just replaced a working Harley branded AGM with a Noco Lithium NLP14 12V 500A 4Ah Battery in my 06 Uly.
It fit in snugly, cables fit well and left about 3" of extra room at the top/rear.
Broom broom all good so far.
Honestly starting was about the same as the AGM. While doing some parts testing it took multiple starts and some no start cranking with no complaints.
8 pound weight savings.... You know many desserts that would be???
My second NOCO, first left here in an FJ1200 I sold. That one was working great also.
PS I make a couple rounds of the batteries in the winter don't leave them on a trickle/maintainer.
Ifcharged occasionally, cold is best life extender for sitting batteries.
