It's been awhile, but I'm back on a Buell, a '09 Ulysses XT to be exact.
My brief history: I purchased one of the first Ulys back in 06. I was into long distant rides and converted the Uly to fit my needs.
Self-claim to fame is that I completed the IronButt Ride Around Texas extreme, (3,xxx miles in under 70 hours, the Sunrise to Sunset Extreme, Most eastern part of Maine to the most western part of Washington State, 3,115 miles in under 70 hours, the Buttlite rally, (7 days, 7,000 miles) and some other smaller ones.
The '06 started to give me troubles, all wiring troubles and left me stranded along the highway a few times. I just couldn't rely on it any more.
I sold the '06 in '08 with 55,000 miles on in. I traded it in for a Honda ST 1300, which was more suited for the highway.

Now that I hit 70, I'm slowing down a little. (maybe) I wanted a lighter bike that had some power and handled well. The exact formula for a Buell.

I just did the LED conversion, changed fluids and cleaned the '09. The previous owners friend died in a motorcycle crash and he no longer had the desire to ride anymore.

Looking forward to adding to the forum instead of just lurking.

I'm guessing your wiring issues were at the harness holder by the goose neck. I took mine off and loosely wired tied it. I think this helped me from experiencing what you did. I'm at around 55,000 on my 06 and only had to fix the ground wires on the goose neck so far. My brother picked up an 09 and loves it. Congrats on joining the insanity again! Welcome back!

wiring harness, dangling fuel pump wires, spark plug wires chaffing, wires laying directly on the cylinder heads, blowing headlight bulbs.
I used a lot of zip ties. just sloppy assembly.

previous owner had a new ecm unit installed along with mending broken wires in the harness.

I'm hoping for the best.

Welcome back, good luck with your new ride, and thanks for your military service. Don’t forget to check the frame ground under the seat. Powder coating should be removed. You may want to relocate the ECM to avoid it hitting the seat.

Thanks Motorfish,
The ECM looks to be in the stock location. I'll make that today's project.

The other 'problem' ground is on the front of the fork stem tube. My '08 somehow managed to break the wires at the terminals.
