getting an intermittent CEL. No issues with the bike whatsoever. Error code reads 33, apparently it's fuel pump related. Anyone has any inside? Thanks!

It's an '09 XT in case if that matters.

what exactly is error 33 other than "fuel pump related"?

33 means fuel pump circuit either high or low. The pump always has 12 VDC supplied to it, the ECU supplies the ground to turn the pump on or off. Since the code comes from the ECU that means it’s detecting something wrong with the ground circuit. The choices are open wire, short to power or short to ground. Open wire means the pump won’t work with no other symptoms. Short to power will blow the ignition fuse, again the pump won’t work. The only thing that would allow you to keep running is short to ground which will keep the pump on all the time. Since you’re getting an intermittent CEL then it’s probably working normally some of the time and always on at other times. The problem wire is supposed to be brown/yellow I believe. The trick is finding where it may be shorted out. Some people here have said that even the newer pumps have had insulation deteriorating on the internal wires of the pump. Easier to check the harness first I would think. The ground wire is connected to two pins on the ECU, no’s 27 and 28 of the 10 connector on the ECU. I just don’t know where the wires are joined but I would imagine it’s close to the ECU plug, maybe. Good luck with the search.

Thanks, will have to try talking the pump out, just wiggling the wires leading to the pump doesn't reproduce the problem.

service manual has great problem solving tree and wire diagrams.

Nice write up griffmeister.

also you can make a pump removal tool quite easily by bending a piece of flat metal and using a fully threaded bolt or all thread and some nuts and washers

if you want i can post up an pic of the ugly tool i've made, but it works fine.

Thanks, a picture of your tool would be appreciated. I am going to build one, but out of wood, not aluminum. Already bought the bolts and washers.

Unfortunately the problem solving tree in the manual requires a special tool that I don't have, but with the bike running fine that brown/yellow wire hitting ground in some positions appears to be the only problem. It's my wife's bike, and it seems to do that (throw the error code that is) with a full tank of gas. Hopefully I'll be able to pull the fuel pump out without removing the swingarm...

i used submersible fuel line from the chain saw to make the split cover that i placed into the aluminum frame of pump to protect wiring.

used junk off of my scrap pile for tool.
black piece had been bracket for brake controller

no need to remove swingarm. remove lower shock bolt. and block rear wheel so swingarm just touches the muffler, but so muffler not supporting the weight.
i think you turn pump 90 degrees clockwise to assist in removal
be patient, do not force anything

Nice pic, you can clearly see the brown/yellow wire. Homemade tools to boot, it don’t get better than that. I’ll have to keep that in the back of my mind for future reference.

There are two of the large O rings. The edge of the housing can cut them. We found it best to lube them with vasoline to install more easily.

I'll be here all week...
