So on my 2009 XT the shift lever looks bent to hell. That can't be normal right? The end is bent about 90 degrees towards the front of the bike.

Anyway. I would like to replace the clutch and brake levers with something a little sharper looking.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I like that they fold. Now when the bike falls over it doesn't break the lever or put holes in the hand guard. I don't make a habit of dropping the bike but it happens.

Post a pic of your shifter. It does have a small curve to get around the primary case. They usually just snap off to prevent further damage, not bend.

Be careful if you get the Chinese brake lever, I've seen it happen more than once where they didn't machine the relief hole correctly, and it would cause the brake to lock up while riding.

The Chinese lever looks good but I am concerned over quality. Any good name brands?

I am partial to Pazzo levers. I've had them on several bikes and they're excellent. I just ordered a set of folders for my Uly—long clutch, short front brake. http://www.pazzoracing.com/

I have seen that done many times. In the world of dirt biking you bend it or cut it off so that you can two finger clutch while standing up on the bike.

Don't forget to lube the top end of the cable where it hooks into the lever. That ferrell needs to pivot in the lever's hole. Otherwise the cable can break from bending there.

Be carefull with eBay Chineese levers. I bought a set and the clutch cable end did not fit in the lever hole.

Some jagoff (yeah, I'm in Pittsburgh) knocked my 08 uly over on its right side when it was parked in front of my house a few years ago. Did the exact same bend to my front brake lever. I'm fairly certain that type of aluminum would break under any sort of attempt to straighten it back out, so I left it alone. I too would like a replacement lever, if at a reasonable price.

Alledgedly, one can bend them back if it's heated up carefully.
The reality is: Don't try this at home until you have a new lever in your hand.

Barkbuster hand guards (or equivalent) with aluminum frames, go a long way toward preventing this type of damage.

I once left the Uly idling on the kickstand while opening the cattle gate to the back way in to the old Oak Hill raceway. The Uly wasn't having it, and somehow managed to overcome the over-center kickstand physics and fell on its left side, bending the clutch lever much like yours.

Once back home, I did some ergonomic figuring and cut the bent lever accordingly, then smoothed the edges. The result is an improvement for me, both functionally and aesthetically. Three fingers are plenty. Keep your cable lubricated. I'm going to do the brake lever too. Why the levers are so long and protrude beyond the handlebars defies reason in my mind. The less in harms way, the better. It even looks better to me. Especially with the bar-end mirror in place of the dorky looking and turbulence generating OEM mirrors.

Just my personal take. If you like all four fingers on the lever it might not work for you.

I like to shift with two or three fingers. I will check out the pazzo levers. What lube do you use for the clutch cable?

If you have a newer clutch cable (with a white sheath liner), it does not need lube, nor does it want any - that's a teflon liner). That's not to say you don't lube the ferrule at the end, that slides into the lever - DEFINITELY lube that so it moves freely in the lever! If it binds in the lever, it will bend and flex where it crimps to the cable, and break the cable at the end.

If you have an older, all-black cable (no teflon liner); and for your ferrule-to-lever lube; I use Dri-Slide. Needle applicator on the bottle, very fluid, "drips" down the length of the cable quite freely and easy to apply. I know some folks use used motor oil or various other types, but I've had over 100,000 miles of good luck with dri-slide. And, this is what it's MADE for.
