So, I've went and checked my notes, looked online, searched the archives here and everywhere else I can think, but I'm not able to find the overall height of a Uly (preferably the XT). To make a long story short, I'm looking at possibly buying a Transit Connect van and am trying to see how practical it would be for the fleet. I can find listings of the seat height, but nothing of the height either with or without bags/windshield.

I suppose I can wait till I get home and then find a measuring device, but that takes more effort than asking here.

Frank, Sorry, I can't remember. I knew when I was shopping for a trailer that I got for mine. The mirrors are the highest point. The trailer I had had a door that was too low to just roll it in. I used a set of ratchet straps to compress the forks so that it would roll in. I also had a cheap electric winch mounted in the nose of the trailer offset to the left a few inches. I put a long control lead on it. Then hooked the winch to the left foot peg. I used it to load and off load solo. Made things safe and easy.

Yea I figure this is something I'm going to have to measure, as my XT has the Tuono mirrors so they are a little lower than the stock lollipops. Just eyeballing pictures I might be able to get it to work with just detaching the bags and windshield. On the current gen Transit Connect, the rear door has 44 or 45 inches of clearance depending on the model. I assume I'm going to lose a little clearance with a ramp, but with the angles of the bike going up and down a ramp it might tilt enough to get past the opening. Inside it is 42.2-49.7" high depending on the model. If the bike is under 40" it should be doable.

If it helps, my '06 Ulysses (stock) is 51" at the top of the mirror (ebay Tuono clone.)

You can take 3 or 4 inches off the front height of a XT using straps to compress the forks.

Riding a Uly is torcher, my back and arms hurt from the awkward riding position, my ass hurts from the uncomfortable seat, it shakes a lot, makes lots of funny noises, and won't calmly cruise down backroads at 145mph.


The Transit Connect is looking too small no matter what I do, which is a shame. The current gen models have a much lower roof than the last gen, but the last gen was only available in short wheelbase. I can get away with putting a trackbike in either, but something with mirrors, license plate and all the other things sticking out are making it not an option.

I did see the full size Transit van, they are quite nice, and can be outfitted as a small RV and still having enough room for a streetbike, but they have the same problem as my truck of being gigantic and expensive. Oh well, maybe in a few years there will be some decent competition for the Transit Connect, Chevy's current offering is a copout of a rebadged Nissan NV200.

Riding position is nothing but bar adjustment - height, width, reach. Ditto pegs - I have some stock CR pegs you can have if you want to bring your feet up an inch. Seat...gonna be trial and error to find one shaped right for you, but it can be done. Noises and shaking...it's an air cooled twin, man...they do that. I'm sure all your iso's are up to date, but if not it's an easy check to decrease some of the vibes.

I know, you hate the air cooled stuff...but they can be adjusted to fit just about anyone : )

Also, since I know you love fuel economy...you should look into used Sprinter vans. Easy 20mpg diesel units...hi-top configuration...pretty damn bulletproof, too.

Yep been looking around to keep my options open, I'm liking these newer style lower entry height vans. Of course in Europe you can get a Transit Connect in various heights, with a stick, and petrol or stinky diesel. Here you can only pick length and which of two crappy 4 bangers under the hood.

I'm still looking around at different things, like you said the Sprinters, I've seen some under $4k should I not mind going the full size route. Dodge offers a cargo version of the Caravan that might do the trick should their little van be too small.

If you happen to have an RV on your lot that I can stuff a Uly in the back of and also doesn't cost a small fortune, let me know : )

Frank, you pretty much knew the answer before you asked it, the Uly and any of the transit's won't go together. Without the lollypops and the windscreen, the highest point is the brake reservoir which is 50 inches. Having to take stuff off seems to be a bit of an inconvenience anyhow, and it's still too high.
What started all this in the first place? Are you looking for something enclosed with a lower load height or some other criteria?

We're seeing Transit RVs with a small powerstroke diesel...so I know the oil burner is available stateside. Ditto a small diesel in the dodge promaster.

New diesels aren't stinky. My grand Cherokee, you literally can't tell it's diesel. No smoke no noise no stink.

My '01 Cummins, on the other hand.... ; )

George, at my work we recently got a Transit Connect to replace an old Ford full size van, and after driving it a few times I was quite impressed by it, it doesn't feel like a giant lowest bid clunker piece of crap that the older style vans are.

I love the low entry height of the cargo area, it is about 2 feet high, vs my lowered truck is still something like at least a foot higher. Also I would be able to do something like make it a ghetto RV with a cot and such to make my trips easier on my wallet. In addition the cargo room would be great for day to day usage, I can't put much in the back of my truck, and despite all my best efforts it is nowhere near weatherproof. Better fuel economy and handling would be a nice bonus too.

Joe, new diesels still stink, they are just not as bad. I was stuck behind a new Colorado Diesel recently, and while it is nowhere near as bad as the pre 2007 trucks, it still is quite stinky, at least when you are on a bike where you can get a face full of it. That said, as long as I was the one driving and couldn't smell it, my selfishness wouldn't care : )
