So I have an 08 XB12X and I recently installed the comfort kit as I was tired of the intense heat from the right side of the bike. I now see that the bike is showing code 36 (cooling fan) and I am wondering if that means that the fan is shot and needs to be replaced, or if something might have happened to the wiring while I was installing the comfort kit. Anyway to diagnose this problem further?

I am not sure when the code first appeared because I have been riding with the yellow check engine light on for about 18 months due to a code 21 (exhaust valve actuator) due to the installation of an aftermarket Jardine. Would also love to get rid of that code if anybody knows how.

Thanks

Fix for running the wrong ECM with the Jardine: http://idspd.com/xcart/buell-xb12-08-09-Jardine-ec m.html

As for the fan, you can test it by grounding it out to see if it still powers up, if it does it likely is fine and your issue is elsewhere.

Of course if you didn't do the '10 fan logic update with the comfort kit, then you should still hear the fan come on when you shut the bike off warm.

idspd.com. Well there you go. A brand new "plug and play" ECM for your aftermarket can and at $300 that seems cheap. Clearly folk are STILL willing to add products to the market for these bikes five years after production ended.

Thanks for the info, Froggy.

Okay, so there are after market ECM products (from ipspd and EBR if they ever start selling them again) and these should solve the issue with the after market exhaust causing a check engine light and possibly improve the bike's performance. I also see that there is a 2010 fan logic update that can be done at the HD dealer now that I have installed the comfort kit. Now I am wondering if these are mutually exclusive? If I get the ipspd ECM to match my Jardine, can the HD dealer still do the '10 fan logic update on top of the ipspd ECM tune, or will that wipe out the ipspd tuning for the Jardine?

Cooling fan problem solved. The fuse was blown. Happy it was a simple fix.

Uly man, I don't remember you offering any advice on this subject, just commentary on the advice of others. Seems like you are STILL in the same pattern.

Don't let the dealer touch a bike with the aftermarket Race ECM, all they can do is upload stock programming, so you would end up pissing money down the drain.

That said, the EBR/IDS ECMs come with the "comfort kit" fan logic

Regarding the fuse, what Uly_Man is implying is you should track down the cause of it. It could be a sign the fan is failing, it could be a worn through wire, etc.

Personally if it blew once and never again I wouldn't worry about it, but if it is reoccurring you will need to do some more troubleshooting.

Sorry I guess I was a little BLUNT on the issue. Folk here like Frog, Rat, ET, Hugh etc offer solid practical working advise. They are very polite on these issues and offer a wealth of knowledge that even HD/ Buell have a problem to counter.

I would suggest that most of these problems can be addressed with a little research if you can spare the time to do it.

"Seems like you are STILL in the same pattern". Yeah and my bike works and yours does not because I know how to repair it so go fix yourself. I could care less.

IF that's blunt, then I don't want to see condescending, arrogant, rude or just plain old nasty.
