Despite beautiful weather, I didn't feel like riding today so I administered a little TLC on the Uly. I haven't done much to my headers since I got the bike in December 2006, so I figured I'd try and shine them up a bit.

After ~1.5 hours of 180 grit sandpaper, 320 grit sandpaper, and Eagle 1 metal polish:

I look at this as "stage 1". I really need to do it again starting with at least 120 grit to get all the pitting out of the metal. At any rate, they look better than they did.

I did this years ago on the S3 I had; they cleaned up much nicer and as an added bonus, they radiated a LOT less heat after the polish job.

Don't sand a hole in them!

I just use SOS pads and WD40.

Those look great! I wrapped mine so shiny is no longer an option. They are a lot better on the leg though.

Hugh, wouldn't it have been easier to do this when you had the engine out of it?

^ oh, yes. I actually have buffing wheels and compounds for polishing stainless steel; I could have done a bang up job with the headers off the bike. I was just so ready for it to be running again I wasn't willing to wait another day to do it. When I eventually have to rotate the engine for something I'll take the time to do them right.

For some reason, I didn't even read that you started the thread until I saw the date of your purchase and then the picture of the engine. LOL! Who else would have a late engine in an '06.
