Hello, I was kindly directed to the site by the advrider people. A few weeks ago, I traded a klr650, for a 2006 Uly with 24000 miles. As soon as I rode it, I was hooked. Seems like the perfect blend of everything I like in a bike. Except, I cant ride it.

Here is what happened. The night I drove home, everything seemed fine. The next night, I rode for a couple of hours. I stopped for gas, then I went to start it, and no battery. So we push started it, and I drove home. Took the battery in to Harley, and it was fine. So, the next night I was out riding in the country, and my low beam got bright for a second, then blew. Switch to high beam, start driving home, and as I gave it gas, poof, blew that bulb. So, I had a scary ride home at 4 am in the dark. I had a friend of a friend come by, who is a mechanic at the HD dealership. So, we checked my voltage regulator. As we revved the bike up, the battery was reading 17 to 18. So, obviously my VR was not working. We replaced the VR, and all seemed fine. I rode the bike for about an hour, and poof, bulb blows again. Come home, check the VR, and its charging back at 17 to 18. So, I fear I burned up another VR, and wasted 160 dollars.

I have done all the searching, and all. I think the new VR came with a new 77 connector, because he had to basically build on out of the parts it came with. So, now we are thinking the stator, but wouldn't if be charging low if that's the problem?

So, I hope someone can steer me in the right direction. I really want to ride this awesome bike. I don't care if its expensive to get it running, I just want it running, so I can take some long rides when I get the itch, and not worry that I wont make it home.

Thanks in advance, and sorry for the long post. Oh, and I ordered the service manual, it just hasn't arrived.

Go to Knowledge Vault and do a search for
77 connector.

Another Uly in FL. Yes.

The HD dealer should have done the tests to determine of the stator was bad also. It may have taken out the new VR if its gone. Pretty common lately it seems as you'll read about several of us with bad ones. Seems the Shindengen unit swap is popular.

Sorry to hear your having problems, but welcome to the club :/

I went with the Shindengen, and its worked out great. There is an upgraded unit for more$$, but not really necessary. Ditch the 77 connector and hard wire it in.

Yes ftd, I am near Tampa. Whisperstealth, I think I may have reviewed a prior post with that link, because I remember looking at it and I didn't know which one I should buy. Ratman, the HD guy had originally checked it, but I don't know what happened. He tested the stator today again, and said it was grounding, but that it shouldn't. So, I am guessing that its
not in good shape. He said he will swap stators for free, since I had to buy a second VR. Thanks for the help, cant wait to get this all worked out because this bike is fun to ride.

Huh. Check grounds. A bad stator should not be able to produce *more* volts, just less. But a bad VR or ground somewhere could do that.

Thanks Reepicheep. He used his multimeter to check if the vr and things were grounded. I would love to find a bad ground. Actually, I just wanna find anything so I can go ride my motorcycle. Thanks again.

Welcome to the badweb, it's a great source for all things Buell. Hope you get things sorted out quickly.

The uly is a great bike and there are plenty of people on here that really enjoy their '06's.

Thanks twistygirl. We pulled the stator, and one of the copper sections is completely burned. So, that's def a big part of the problem. Hopefully I can find a HD store tomorrow that has the stator and vr in stock. Maybe I can be riding this weekend. Fingers crossed

Exact same thing happened to me. I trashed a new VR because I didn't check the stator first. Fixed it right and have been trouble free since. The new parts are better than originals. I guess it took them time to get it right. Enjoy it, it's a wonderful machine.
