Hi all,

While I was changing the plug wires yesterday I took some time to look around. I found an electrical connector that is unconnected! Any idea what this is??

It is located just under the leftside of the airbox's baseplate 90 degrees from the throttle cable. The black box in the foreground is the ignition coil where the spark plug wires boot onto.

I also found what looks like a little brass tip that should have a tube attached to it on the other side.

I can't seem to find these in to service manual.

Thank you for you help,
Matt

Not sure on the electrical connector, it dosen't ring a bell off the top of my head.

The missing tube hole should be plugged. That is the vacuum port for the carbon canister on CA and HDI bikes. With the cap missing, you essentially have an intake leak.

That connector looks like the one that goes to the air temp sensor under the airbox.

If that's the air temp sensor plug then you should have your check engine light on or have at least thrown a code.

Froggy's right, need to get a cap on the vacuum port! I'm surprised it even starts with that off!

I have replaced a few of those vacuum port caps. They seem to disappear after a back fire or two. They usually run with it gone, but it will seem a "little off". That is due
in part to the ECM's learn capability. It will attempt to run richer to mask a small vacuum leak, throwing things out of whack.

Yes that plug looks like it goes to the AIR sensor in the air box base plate. It will not run correctly with that unplugged.

Might need to go to the Yamaha shop and get one of those nice vacuum caps with the spring clamp on it. They used them on the ports for synchronizing the carbs back in the eighties. They don't come off!!

I learned years ago, when playing with 2.2 turbo cars - if it's a vacuum fitting and you run higher boost than stock (most of mine run 24-36psi compared to a stock 7-14psi)...PUT A ZIP TIE ON EVERY VACUUM FITTING.

Tightly.

If they hold with the stress of 30+ psi of boost...they'll hold through a backfire : )

FYI: I found that my X1 wouldn't throw a code if the intake temp wire was unhooked but it would if the wire was shorted to ground.

It looks like two large issues were just found there!

Any suggestion where I can get such a vacuum fitting for the future?

There isn't any code in the parts catalog.

Is the brass tube under the airbox also? I'd like to check mine.

True the nipple should be plugged when not in use.
However, that is a ported vacuum line. And, capped or not it won't make a nickle's worth of difference in how the engine runs.
Worse thing that can happen is dirt ingestion.

Teeps, are you saying the port is above the butterfly so it's not manifold vacuum? As high as it is on the Throttle Body that would make sense. Now that I actually think about it, you wouldn't want that canister air at idle, only when your throttle butterfly is opened up causing enough vacuum to pull the fumes. Thanks for the clarification.

That is exactly right Tootal.

When the butterfly is opened to expose the port, there is vacuum on the fitting, enough to evacuate accumulated hydrocarbon vapors in the evaporative emissions canister.

ok, so I need to call up my dealer to get a vacume cap. Any ideas on part numbers or should they know?

Also, regarding the connector, My airbpx temp sensor already has a connector plugged into it, so unless it has 2 this isn't it.
Also, i don't think this connector could reach all the way around to the back cylinder to connect to the airbox temp sensor.

On a side note my bike runs like new ever since I changed the spark plug wires and tightened up what i beleive is the main engine ground.

Matt, I wouldn't call a dealer, as mentioned above you can pick one up at any automotive store. They usually have a variety pack and one of those should fit.

Glad to hear it running well.

I don't know what the connector goes to.

What the hell would that connector go to??

I thought his temp sensor was flopping around.
Now what?

I kind of lose it around the unit which the trottlecable connects to.

I cannot see if it connects to this part or just goes around it.

Also I have been nosing around the breather rerout threads to see if I can spot this connector and it seems like NONE of the other Ulys have this connector??

I don't remember another connector right there, I have a couple in my seat area but I don't remember one there.
I'll try to take a look by this weekend to see if I have one or not.

Regarding the electrical connector:
Dealer beleives this to be the connector for the japanese version because they have different EPA laws and require an extra control unit that we do not have.

Regarding the vacuum cap:
dealer says this is connected to a hoes that vent out back, it is the lower crank case breather.

That I believe.

That I don't. It's for the CA evaporative emissions canister hose, plugged for everyone else. Hit the auto parts store.
