Hey all. I've been having some problems with my Uly this summer. I use it to commute to and from work about 23 miles and everytime it gets hot it begins to stumble and eventually shuts down on me. There are no check engine lights or flashing lights when this occurs. Its just quits and over to the side of the road I go. Last week, it died on me four times on the way home and I picked up a nail in my rear tire. Bad day! I've changed the plugs, They looked good. The pressure in the tank is good. The only thing I have noticed is the fan doesn't come on until I get home and turn the bike off. When it quits on it's own, the fan doesn't run and I have to pull the seat off to let it cool down. Eventually, when it's cool enough I can start it and get going. Last year it was fine. I did have the fan changed, a new rear head gasket and the Ulysses cooling kit put on towards the end of the season. Any ideas would be helpful before I take it into the dealer at the end of the week. Thanks | ||

I will check the ECM and make sure it's tightened down. The battery connections and ground are all good. The fuel vent, if that's the hose going across the top of the air intake, is good. Thanks. | ||

Check the connectors on the ECM. You could have pressure from the seat cracking the electrical connectors, causing problems. It's not common...but not unheard-of. They have spacer blocks on later bikes to prevent this. | ||

Head temperature sensor would also be worth checking. | ||

If the ECM is shutting down the bike because it thinks it's too hot, the check engine light will flash. This isn't happening right? | ||

If you find out why, please let me know. Mine would do that AND the Skip Spark BS. I've got the Etennuly mod done to my fan, but I'm still dealing with this same problem on my '07. It's the reason the Uly stays parked in the garage - I can't trust it to make it on my 25 mile commute to work, let alone any trips to NC.  | ||

Something easy to check would be the fuses and relays. I and people I know have had heat-related issues involving the fuel pump fuse. Pull it, check it, maybe add some dielectric grease while you are in there. Couldn't hurt. Maybe the heat is overloading a relay? | ||

There is something wrong there that the fan is not coming on when it is hot and running. Florida-lime I did not know your issue was continuing even with full control of the fan. If the engine is cutting off when heated up, and the fan is on full time with the switch, I would first suspect the fuel pump wires rubbing through, and or the pump failing when it gets hot, along with the fuel filter and pick up screen being dirty and not efficient enough when the fuel is hot. | ||

Thanks everybody for the ideas. I'm not sure it's the voltage regulator. I have a volt meter installed and it never fluctuates but who knows. I will go over the fuses and make sure there all ok. I'll keep you all posted with what I find out. | ||

+1 on ECM / ECM connectors. Firstly check for corrosion on the ECM pins themselves and I would also try some gentle pressure on the ECM connectors while it is idling - you might be able to scare out a bad joint that is being shown up by heat. |
