Does anyone make a high output stator for the XB12/Sportster motor? Or can the stock unit be rewound like it seems you can do with so many enduro bikes being preped for serious lighting?

I don't have a bit of trouble out of my '06, even when I had the high-beam mod (2 lights on) and a pair of 55w halogens also triggered by the high beam.

I have since removed the 2-light hi-beam mod, and my LED voltmeter doesn't even twitch when I go from one low beam to three lights on high beam.

Any higher than what you have on an 06 will trash itself and the VR pretty frequently unless you are running a crap load of stuff ALL the time.

How much "serious lighting" are you planning on running?

Not that much. I'm currently running a pair of PIAA 1100X running lights and I have DMM HIDs in both beams, 35w in the low and 55w in the high. I don't have the dual beam mod done (yet). When I'm running the PIAAs with the 35w low beam I'm down to my last green light on the volt meter. When I'm at idle, that last light will sometimes flicker. With the fan and the three lights running, the green light flickers continuously at idle. This makes me worry about what will happen after I've done the two beam mod and when I start running the heated grips and perhaps heated clothing in the winter.

Where's your idle set? 1050 is spec. Most folks set it lower to get "that idle note"...but any lower than spec gives you serious voltage drops.

Green light flickering means you're right around 12v. Solid green is 13ish; solid amber is 11.

If it only does it at idle...you'll be fine. It's when it stops coming up with the revs that you have problems.

And FWIW, mine barely changes at all with heated gear and grips on. If I have the gear (jacket and gloves) on a "medium" setting - i.e. switching on and off to regulate the temp - it will cause more of a V drop than just having it on high (which is just "on"). And the gauge never notices the grips.

If you rewind the stator for more power, you'll have to run ALL those items ALL the time. Otherwise the excess power gets shunted to ground and bad things follow.

There was a reason they reduced the stator output on later Ulys.

Also keep in mind, that the stator makes more power the faster you spin it. If you like to ride "spiritedly", you'll exacerbate the issue.
