After several premature break-in oil changes, my friend had a blonde moment and stripped the swingarm oil change bolt on his shiny new 09 XB12X, despite being warned by myself to adopt much lower torque specs (12-16ft/lbs), rather than the incorrect oem specs of (26-29ft/lbs). But he's alway's got a lot on his mind and incorrectly referred to his oem manual's specs, which he should have blacked out and revised, too bad, so sad... After spending the morning on the web and the phone, it looks like it'll be the TimeSert "Professional drainplug thread repair kit", for aluminum pans with Buell's oem drain bolt specs of 1/2"x20 fine thread pitch. TimeSert Kit part# 0122A that we'll now have to order... This specific kit feature's a shorter than industry commonplace insert length of .400", which should suit the aprox 9 to 10mm of swingarm wall thickness the friend measured last night. Otherwise the vast majority of solid core inserts, are generally .600" in length and would have to be carefully inserted and then ground flush... Just a suggestion to the moderators, while this problem is well known to most inmates, let's highlight this revised torque spec issue in any and all New Owner/Knowledge Vault threads, so it's stand's out in Technicolor ! It wouldn't have helped my friend with his dementia moment, he'd been warned, but any new/used owners should be able to come across this information, close to immediately on this site in the Uly or XB forums... 996DL (Message edited by 996dl on July 05, 2010) |

996dl WEll Hummmmmmm. I guess the fact that I use this sucker contraption my Bro In law gave me a few years ago for X-Mas is a good thing after all. I have changed the oil 3 times now and suck all the oil from the swingarm with this 5/16 diamiter hard poly tube attached to the bee hive looking tank. Pump the handle and it creates suction. Get 95 % of the old crap out. I will pull it one day. Maybe. AHhahaaaaa. BDRAG |

I seem to remember someone actually getting a warranty repair on this as long as you tell the dealership you followed the factory torque specs. Hope you get your bike sorted |

996 Good info on the TimeSert specs. I hope I will not need them but I printed them out and placed it in my shop manual just the same. Thanks |

Still awaiting the TimeSert repair kit, ordered through Threadkits.com a large Torrance Calif. supplier, that happily ships USPS to Canada, thus avoiding the horrid brokerage fees that UPS feels obliged to tack on to shipments to Canada. They had two of these kits in stock and were recommended by TimeSert themselves, as I was requesting the above mentioned USPS specific shipping and TimeSert only uses UPS inhouse. Both companies were a pleasure to deal with, by the way ! No Johnboy777, this sweet 09 XB12X is truly a friend's, although I sourced this firesale bargain for him this spring. Sometimes if you can't afford to take advantage of a great bike at a spectacular price, it's feels just as good to pass it on to a friend ! I'd still like to see the moderators on this site including the lower drainplug torque specs (12 to 16 ft/lbs ?), in the XB/ULY New Owner/Knowledge Vault threads, so the chances of this happening can be lessened for others... 996DL |
