'08 XT has a nail in rear tire, so need to replace. What's the typical cost to have the rear tire replaced at a dealer. Shop removes wheel, replaces tire with their tire, balance and reinstalls wheel.

Thanks

Cost of tire + an hour labor, so $215 for the tire, $90 hour, so $300ish dollars plus taxes, fees, etc.

Or you could just plug the thing.

Or pull the wheel off, take it to an independent shop and pay around $200.00 for everything.

Or you could just plug the thing.

If your gonna pay the dealer to install the tire you might as well light $100 on fire.

One of our local shops in ATL will change/balance a tire on the bike for $30 + cost of tire.

Independents do a better job cheaper.

Not necessarily - indies here have the same shop rates as the local HD dealer. Mount and balance was $52 last time with an internet purchased tire (front).

Froggy is pretty close to the pricing on having a dealer doing the rear tire.

As for the plugging, it all depends on where and what angle the nail went in the tire to determine if plugging is the way to go. One time I had success with a plug and the next time it wouldn't hold air.

Just FYI - 99% of the time I do all my own work. This time I'm in the middle of building a deck and have only 2 days to finish it before I leave town of town which the day after my return I have a ride scheduled. I simple don't have time.

Second I don't plug motorcycle tires on anything with less than 4 wheels. The chance of failure does increase, the how much it increases I agree is debatable. But the fact remains the integrity of the tire is compromised. I've had car tires fail after being plugged, the risk of failure on 2 wheels isn't worth the money I'll save to have it plugged vs. replaced.

Last - thanks for the replies.

Just had the same thing addressed today. Picked up a screw on last ride, took 3 plugs to seal it, took the bike this morning to great local indie shop (Berkeley Performance Motorcycles, no affiliation), they couldn't get an internal patch to hold on the rear PR2. Attempt to repair, spooning owner-provided new tire w/balancing was $76.

Have a buddy of mine that will pull the wheel while I'm gone, just order a new tire online.

Motorcycle Superstore has affiliated local shops, pretty much wherever you are. Just went through it. $35 to remove wheel, mount, balance and remount. Pirelli Strada was $16x, delivered right to the shop. So full out the door was less than local HD shops price of the tire ($225). I like/ want to support Buell dealers, but I can't pay nearly double.

made me think of the days I use to ride 4-wheelers up in Northern Wisconsin. We ALWAYS carried a couple of cans of fix-a-flat when riding because someone would always have a flat. Just add a can or two of fix-a-flat and continue riding, never did change any tires.

Just went through the same today except a flooring staple (construction in the neighborhood).

Ordered a Scorpion Trail rear...told 1/5 available in the country (dunno if I buy that).

Left Mom and Pop the rear...$160 delivered, mounted and balanced...would have been another $20 to have the rear re-installed.

The dealer here quoted me $271 for a rear Michelin Pilot 2CT w/ free mounting. I purchased a tire online for $125 w/ shipping, brought in new tire and wheel. They charged $47 to mount it. Saved almost $100, and got the whole wheel r/r procedure down pat. They didn't have the tire in stock, they would have to order it. Online tire arrived when theirs would have, so the time frame was only longer by the amount of time it took to re-install wheel within my work schedule.

My dealer mounted and balanced for free if I bought the tire there. Not to bad of a deal and a hell of a dealer. To bad I had to move away .

Just buy a nomar tire changer and do it yourself. It will save you in the long run.

There is a video of how to change a Buell tire on this website. Looks fairly easy. http://www.jakewilson.com/videos.do
