Hey ALL,

The last two days here in Texas the weather has finally gotten warm. Low 80's. My 2009 XB12X smells like a freakin lawn mower! Smells like RAW gas BAD!

I pulled the Intake cover off to look around and the only place I can see fuel or get the big wiff is where the vent tube dumps out along the left side of the swing arm. Its damp with fuel.

Is this normal? I see there is some sort of gadget mounted in the frame where the vent tube enters the frame. Is this a check valve or what? Let me know before I blow up the bike and garage. HAhahaaaaaa.

Thanks in advance........

Yea that hose is the gas tank vent, it is normal for it to have a slight odor. If it bothers you, you can install the California emissions carbon canister.

I live in Austin. The gasoline oder is really, really bad. I have had more than 50 motorcycles and have never smelled vented vapors more strongly than those that come from my '07 Ully. I just keep the garage door cracked about a foot after riding.

How many of them have the motor right in between the gas tank? Again, the carbon canister is easy to install and will fix this "issue"

Same thing...garage smells like gas...only for a while after I park it...don't think it's a big deal...better than potpourri and vanilla candles

Well, if my Suzuki LC 1500 was smelling of gas, it ment I had the dreaded split gas tank and the recal was needed. I have had that bike since 2000 (First year was 98 )and the first split tanks started showing up in 2001. Ever since then I leave the cap just not quite tight. Just in case its a pressure thing. Oil caning. Don't sound like its gonna be a problem on the Uly. Guess I will get use to it.

Not any of them. Most have had engines under the gas tank and I think that the fuel in my FJR 1300, my 1000RR, my ZX12, CB1000 etc...boiling after summer rides indicates that the gas gets hotter in conventional metal tank bikes than in the Buell. I've never heard any gurgling coming from the frame (tank) of my Ully.

I'm speculating there is a posting outlining the carbon canister install. Do you have a link Froggy?

Higher volatility Winter gas still in the tanks? Summer gas not so volatile.

I've got an 06 and an 07 and a Yamaha Radian, 07 Sportster, and a 97' Electraglide AND a Prius in our 1 stall slightly long garage and do not have a gas odor problem. I must admit to a personal gas odor problem but I spend more time in the house than in the garage.

Have had the "fuelly uly" syndrome on the xt myself. It has been less stinky recently, but my recent mpgs have been suckalicious (30 mpgs this last tank ). Could be spring blend gas, my recent 10 minute each way commute to the school a mere 2 towns over, or a little of both. Glad to know there's a fix for the stinkiness if need be though.

I've found a few things that help prevent fuel overflow:
1. Fill up at the beginning of a ride, not before parking. Heat expands the fuel and can cause overflow.
2. Ulys seem to have minimal 'expansion' space in the tank. Only fill to the hole that is under the fuel cap. Don't fill the 'neck' area.
