I am in the process of pulling the motor out to replace rear rocker box gaskets and have the heads ported whiles the motor is out. Are there any issues I can address now while I have the chance and save my self from being stranded by broken wire ect.

how many miles on the motor? You got it out make it bigger! Stroke that puppy if funds allow. If not just clean it up and make sure all of your wires are still in good condition.

I would put heat reflecting tape on the inside of the frame.

I would do the breather mod.

As for porting the heads; been there done that... unless you need a project, there won't be enough of a (power) gain, to justify the cost or (your) time (IMO.)

The heat barrier tape is a good one mod, if that is a problem for you.

Not to derail the thread, but why are you removing the engine to do all this? Rotation will allow that.

Seems like overkill, unless you just really want to do it.

teeps did you do the heads your self or have a pro do them it is my understanding and experience that properly ported heads can yield more than few ponies.

Dr greg because I started taring stuff apart and figured I would look at the Manuel when I got stumped I got two more bolts and shell be out. I guess I am a bit of a cowboy I would have fit in in the towns you passed through on your last big trip great piece by the way. yea ha (side note my supervisor has a sticker in his truck that says real men don't read directions. after doing a complicated job with him that was taking to long because we weren't reading direction I made the comment that I guess this means were REAL MEN Ha Ha)

Dio the General was born in the year two thousand and seven and he has traveled 20k happy miles the leak started about 15k and in the to the dealer he went they said it was my crank case breather, so I put it back to stock and cleaned her as best as possible then the fan pooped out around 16k replaced fan and cleaned the best I could and she still leaked that is when I noticed that it was my rear valve cover gasket.

High & efficient flow in the heads is one of the (many) things set's the Thunderstorm engine apart from the HD Evolution. From what I understand, aside from adding more cubes or perhaps a blower, there's little that can be done to one of these to get any more meaningful horsepower - at least nothing that won't seriously compromise reliability & economy.

If you taking the heads off I'd replace the cylinder base gaskets, JMHO

Except that these bikes are pretty much wrung out from the factory. Short of dropping coin on major changes like a big bore or turbocharger, your not going to get much more out of them.

+1 Froggy, exactly my point.

Jaybirdxb12x

I have not ported my Uly's heads, nor would I bother for the above stated reasons.

Accept the fact that Buell gave us 103 "RELIABLE" ponies at no extra charge; just enjoy the ride...

the motor has more power than I will ever need! If I did anything, I would downsize to a XB9 motor which would have plenty of power for my riding.

If you want more torque then put the XB9 primary gearing in. If you want more top end then don't do that. I wouldn't waste money on porting as per above but I love the 9 gearing and I can still hit 120, only quicker!

thanks for all your input I probably should have read before confirming bid with the chap performing work I guess the dyno will tell the true story when I get it all back together and tune the bike.
