got my 1k service done while my oil pump assy was being replaced yesterday. i was just looking at the receipt and it says they used syn 3 . no more dino oil for buells? and omfg ,i can't believe how much service costs now. $325 for the 1k ,2.5k , 5k and $500 , for the 10k . thank god i'm not mechanically retarded.

There is no 2.5K service, and those prices look fine.

i dunno about that, my 1K service was only 200 dollars.....and it was just to change the oil... a 10 minute job in my primative garage.

The 1k is more than an oil change, as its the first service for the bike it requires going over the bike and checking fasteners and such. Here is the details from the 06 owners manual:

The first scheduled maintenance is at 1000 miles (1600 kilometers). See Regular Service Intervals: Buell Models for complete list of required services.

Change engine oil.

Replace oil filter.

Change transmission fluid and clean magnetic drain plug.

Check and adjust primary chain.

Adjust throttle position sensor (TPS).

Inspect brake fluid level and condition. Check hydraulic brake lines and fittings for leaks.

Check brake pads and rotors for wear.

Adjust clutch adjustment.

Check oil lines for leaks.

Check tire pressure and inspect tread.

Inspect air cleaner filter.

Check throttle cable adjustments.

Check operation of all electrical equipment and switches.

Road test.




Cost will vary with labor rates, $300 is the ballpark where I live including synthetic fluids.

The service manual is $60 PLUS I get to know my Uly better than taking her into the shop......IMHO.

Bought my bike used with 1800 miles.
Oil was black, clutch hold down clip
was already broken, half the nylon
washers on the muffler cowel were missing.
Dealer supposedly had just done the 1000
mile check?
Now the bike has 12,000 miles, clean oil, everything is perfect, runs great, I have a pocket full of money, and the dealer is still making his money selling dew-rags!
But not to me!

Does doing your own service affect warranty at all? Some manufacturers want to nail you for that I'm about to get a new bike, and, will be doing my own service, but, don't want to get screwed if there's a warranty issue..

Jim, why not negotiate the first service into the deal when purchasing the new bike? It doesn't hurt to try, the worst they can say is no.

Syn 3 or any brand synthetic that meets spec. There are only 3 reasons to use dino over synthetic, 1. Engine burns oil, why waste the money. 2. Engine badly leaks oil, synthetic will tend to leak more than dino if there is a present leak. Synthetic is more slippery. 3. Cost, syn costs more. Other than that there is zero reason to use dino. Never has been. Synthetic is superior in every way.
