Something occurred to me about the new axle arrangement; the shoulder on the pulley side is twice the width [edit- more like three times the width] of the old axle due to the dual bearing setup. That means you'll have to back the axle out a lot more than the 15 turns required for the old setup in order to relieve the tension on the belt. In fact, I wonder if you can unscrew it far enough to relieve the belt tension before the axle un-threads completely.

Anybody got a 2010 shop manual yet?

Why is there a Buell logo on that last one? Also, good luck finding torque values and wheel removal procedures in a PARTS book : D

>>>This just ain't right...

If you don't like it . . . don't buy it.

Be mindful that Harley-Davidson has been sourcing parts from overseas since I bought my first XLCR Cafe Racer.

In addition. . . my Buell has more domestic parts content than my Ford F-150 pickup.

Should also add that there are NO WHEELS made in the United States. We had this discussion a while back and folks floated names like PM and such . . . . who work in annual quantities that would supply Buell for less than a week and made NO CAST wheels.

Even Ronal, the cast wheel maker in Germany, who supplies all the Porsche wheels, closed down their operation in America.

Buell has a choice . . . . source wheels the ONLY place they can get them or not build motorcycles.

By the way . . . . don't be to tough on the Chinese . . . they own more of America than the U.S. Govt currently does . . . you'll just make them laugh at Geithner again.

"....there are NO WHEELS made in the United States."

I think that I will take Court's advice and run my current wheel until it can not be repaired or I scrap the bike.

We may need to change that slogan from "Buy American" to "Buy Less Chinese".

That may happen. I am seeing the stage wet for a resurgence of American manufacturing.

It won't happen under the current administration but I can see the stars lining up.

It could be an interesting next 10 years.

Just got my Uly back from the shop today, since my rear wheel bearing went south. It has a 2010 wheel and bearings installed, and new swing arm. I also have a brand new 2008 wheel, axle, spacer, and bearings in the factory box that I'll need to move. The dealer gave me an excellent price on the 2010 wheel. Now if it increases the reliability as well as we think it will, I'll be very pleased.

Took it on a short ride and the new ECM update does make a difference on how the fan runs. It was cool here today in the low 60's and the fan only ran for a very short time after shut down.

We will give the new wheel a good cruise Labor Day weekend.

Court, thanks for posting all the wheel upgrade info.

Big thanks to Buell for providing these wonderful '10 upgrades. They are listening to us users and I will be spending more money with them. I love it!

Let's see; new wheel kit, comfort kit, tall seat ...

At the dealer show, Willie G modeled a new line of leathers, and proudly flipped open the jacket to show a "Made in the USA" label.

It's a start.

>>>It's a start.

It will be if they sell.

Traditionally folks SAY they will "Buy American". But faced with even the slightest price differential, they do not.

Be mindful we have a group on Badweb currently engaging in a "group buy" for a washer for an oil drain plug to save less than the price of a McDonald's Happy Meal and to not have to buy from a dealer.

I've been seeing bikes show up at dealers "just do the warranty work, I'll change my own oil".

Eventually HD and Buell have to produce what folks actually buy.

I think the big news in the next 20 years will be the resurgence of American manufacturing but folks need to get past the silly "it's all about wages" thinking and see the bigger picture.

When your dealer charges as much for an oil change as mine does, that is totally understandable. For my initial service, I got them to change my oil, and they had the nerve to charge me for 3 quarts of overpriced oil even though it only needs 2.5. The reason? They have to open the 3rd quart so they charge the full amount. I have a feeling that they didn't throw the other half quart away... That, plus when I changed my oil the next time (a couple of weeks ago), I noticed that the drain plug was barely hand tightened, and there had been oil seeping out. That explained my oil "usage".

I can't believe that the Harley crowd around here puts up with that - actually, I CAN believe that they put up with it. I however, will be doing my oil changes myself from now on.

That being said, I did buy a tire from them the other day instead of going to a cheaper import dealer, because I am going to want them to do warranty work for me in the future, and figure I can't just use them for warranty work. Plus I didn't want to bother taking my wheel off by myself.

Don't the dealers have the oil "on tap"?

At my dads shop, we got a 500 gallon tank of 10w-30 and barrels of various other grades/blends. Much more economical and less wasteful than opening 100 bottles of oil in a day.

I don't entirely disagree on the oil change thing . . . . I know the feeling having just paid $237.28 to get my F-150 serviced at VIP Wash and Lube down the street.

They charge me $14.98 a quart for Mobil 1 that I can buy a case of at Costco for something like $25 . . . . but the convenience of driving in, them having the facilities and being able to do everything in minutes has some value.

The tires is actually a better example. How would you feel, we're just talking here, if you were a dealer and rather than but your $200 tire a guy came in with one he bought on the internet for $179 and wanted it mounted?

Would you give any sort of "discount" on the mounting?

There's a lot of gray area here . . . . I see stuff at dealers that absolutely galls me . . but at the same time I see some dealers busting their tails to do the best they can and I realize that they can't do that trying to be cheapest on everything.

I'm sure they do...

It's funny, it never struck me when I was paying at the dealer how insane it was when he told me about having to charge for the full quart - I thought "yeah, makes sense"... only afterward did I realize how ridiculous it was.

Nope, I wouldn't give any discount on the mounting - the guy would pay full price.

But you also have to ask yourself, why is it that the HD dealer here charges me $40 more for the same tire I could buy at the import dealer? It's not because his rent is higher, that's for sure.

It irks me to pay more for stuff just because it comes from the Harley place... And I'm not even talking about how much more we have to pay up here in Canada for the same Buell/HD stuff that's available in the US. The Canadian HD distributor is making a bundle on gullible HD buyers.

Just to be devils' advocate (and because I work at a dealer so I see the "other side"), sometimes our suppliers (i.e. HD) don't have the best dealer cost. Tires are a prime example these days. Only recently have we (our dealership) started looking at other vendors for OEM tires, because of the number/quantity of folks carrying in tires and reporting *significantly* lower pricing. Sometimes it's not dealer choice in the matter - we gotta buy 'em too, and if our supplier is charging more...we gotta charge more. Unfortunately we don't have the staff in place to constantly hunt for the "better deal", and business models require we go the most efficient route...which isn't always the lowest dollar amount.

It's an equation I don't pretend to understand, but Court's analogy of price versus convenience...gets it pretty close.

Sorry, but can we get back to the 2010 Uly wheel upgrade? This is quite a Good Thing in my book from BMC and I want to know more.

I've bitched quite a bit over the last couple years about my first year's horror stories of my purchasing dealer's POS service department. I even had 2 years FREE maintenance servicing included in my purchase, but after the first two visits I said "Hell no, no more." Only warranty issues caused visits to a HD dealer after that.

I do my own maintenance and repairs because I can and like to, and get my parts from American Sport Bike or Skip Fordyce in Riverside CA because they're Buell people. Or Auto Zone or Kragen if I find a cross-referenced alternative to save me some $$.

Anybody else is free to do the same, or they can choose to spend a lot of their cash at HD dealers who are cruising along on an image and really don't care about Buells.

Pics, pics, and more pics and reports about this new bearing/axle upgrade please!

As do I.

I have to wonder why, if there was nothing wrong with the original design, did Buell feel the need to make substantial changes to the rear wheel of the 2010 Uyl?
