On my 09 Uly, when I turn the key on the headlight doesn't always turn on. The high beam indicator lights up, regardless of the position of the hi-low beam switch. After I start the bike and let it idle for a couple minutes the high beam indicator goes out and the headlight comes on. It doesn't always do this. I did the headlight mod by switching the wires in the connector behind the flyscreen when the bike was new. I added Moto Lights but they are wired direct to the battery and the relay is triggered off the accessory plug. The bike is under warranty but I will probably switch the headlight wires back before I take it in. Anyone else had or heard of this problem? |

My guess: Grounding lug under the flyscreen is loose. Easy to look in there if you don't want to bother sending it in for warranty. |

Yes, losing your ground. The 2 bulbs are grounded together but it aint making it to the frame. The only ground the lighting system has in this condition is the is the other side of the H-beam ind. bulb. The current lights up the ind. on it's way to ground but the resistance of the ind. bulb filament stops the heads from glowing. (Message edited by ronmold on October 01, 2009) |

I switched the yellow/yellow brown wires at connector back to stock. Otherwise the headlite stays on at startup and also had intermittent problem with connector contact similar to your symptoms. (Those connector pins are pretty fragile) Went with soldering a 'bridge' between the yellow & blue wire in headlite switch. Works great, and keeps everything on original circuits. DO check those grounds. |

THANKS! I'll check the grounds. I'm afraid to take it to the the dealer and end up with a big repair bill "because of something I did, not covered under warranty." |

I don't know how 'visible' your pin swap is. I had striped back the tape to get better access to the connector - it was quite obvious it had been tampered with. To that end, I figured it was no longer Buell's problem, but rather mine. If it's not a ground than it's likely the connector. I buggered mine up so bad switching the 2 wires, I had to replace it. Used a different 4 prong Molex connector, a bit less flimsy than the stock one. When you look at how the stock connector is constructed, it doesnt take much for those pins to get out of alignment & allow electrical gremlins to prevail. My symptoms were intermittent headlights in either hi or lo mode. If I wiggled the connector they would come back on, but unfortunately, were only reliable until the next bump in the road. I'm wiser now...in retrospect. Good luck. j |

It is the connector causing the problem. Apparently I damaged it when I swapped the wires. JPHISH, where did you get the molex connector you spoke of? |

Radio Shack carries 4 pin Molex connectors. I replaced my stock connector with a Sumitomo 2 pin connector. I only need two pins because the low and high beam feeds are controlling individual relays for my HID's. Tipsy |

57' - I did in fact get mine at Radio Shack, just like tipsy said. I always carry a spare 4 pin connector & a few posilock connectors on trips. Unfortunately... they have come in handy. The Molex I got doesn't have a 'locking' feature so just used a ziptie to keep the male/female parts plugged together. Works fine, and not as tempermental as the stock connector. NOTE: I read and article that said generally connectors are only good for about 10 cycles of plug / unplug before they wear out. I never knew that. j |

i had the same problem after doing the two on mod for my 06. i had buggered up the male pin when poking it out with a paper clip. i just replaced the male connector with a 12 cent part from napa and has worked fine ever since. |
