I laid my Ulysses down (at a very slow speed/almost stopped). The only apparent damage is a scuffed up left bag. I picked it up and rode off. It runs great. The check engine light is on. Will it eventually reset itself?

Did you turn the bike on and off? If its still on, you can jump the pins on the data port to make the check engine light flash the error code.

I have shut off and restarted the bike 3 times since then. Forgive my ignorance, but exactly how do you do that? and is there a legend somewhere for deciphering the error codes? Thank you.

The procedure and codes are listed in your service manual.

Under the seat on the left side on a Uly is the test connector.Jumper pins 1 and 2 light green with red and black then turn the key on.After a few seconds the check engine light should flash a code like flash-flash-flash-flash then a slight pause then flash-flash-flash-flash,thats code 44 for the bank angle sensor.

Thats how it was done back in the old days on cars before we had all these fancy computers.

Pages 4-8 to 4-92 in shop manual has the descriptions and pinpoint tests.Looks like the only way to clear the codes without the fancy computer is to run the bike 50 times.

Good luck.
