Glen, That is how they suckered me into the 1k oil change. I bought the book. Hey they did wash it, woo hoo.

Not knowing who did Glen's work, but believe me, if all he got was a fluid change, he was snookered. And there is a law that prevents a manufacturer of a product from voiding warranty if factory service is followed by individuals.

On the other hand, many a rider thinks they can do a 1k or 5k (basically the same procedures) and they change the oil and adjust the clutch and call it good. Again at 10, and 15,000 miles then down the road and a valve seal craps, or a wheel bearing fails, a fork seal is leaking. Repair costs are higher than they had to be, and warranty may not cover it.

Hmmm... who shoulda caught that?

The 5k service is detailed in the service manual. If you under take it, do not skip any of the steps, inspections or adjustments. And keep records of having done them. If you want to play service tech, and not pay a factory trained guy with drawers full of specialty tools to service your bike, that is fine. Just do the same job he would do.

Oh, then when the local dealer drops Buell because he can't keep a trained service tech employed and you have to cart your bike 200 miles for some warranty work, well, you reap what you sow.

Not all dealerships are the scourge and bane of Buell owners

Some work very hard to earn their business and they appreciate their customers.

"i wasnt very enthused seeing the mechanic taking off on my baby. lol test ride my arse, how would a guy whom doesnt ride a Uly jump on one and detect somthing out of the norm that the owner hasnt detected...."
................o~'o

maybe because, at least in our case,
1) he is the lead tech on at least four different race Buells we service & campaign
2) he does, in fact ride a Buell and hears the same doubts and attitude from customers previously treated badly at other dealers but works hard to win them over from the dark side to one of cooperation
3) he works on sometimes 3 to 5 Buells a week and experiences how a good Buell runs & rides, and learns how bad & ailing ones do, then learns cause and effect on each and every one where you have experience on one
4) maybe because he is trained on what to look, listen and feel for
5) maybe because the thorough job he did requires he verify that, after its all done & buttoned up, nothing was over looked in the haste to get some customers out or just the hectic pace of a busy dealership in riding season

And I would have to ask myself, would I trust a tech's work if he were not willing to go on a 3-4mile test ride after he was done?

Because it is a XB! The XBs and I mean all the XBs are refined bikes and it has been my experience that they all ride pretty much the same, same motor, same fuel injection, same transmission etc. It is very easy to tell is something is out of wack from a simple test ride. If you are riding your bike you may not notice something that has a gradual symptom. Someone that has not ridden your bike will notice it right away.

Jammer, come work on my bike.

I turned mine in for the 1k appointment and waited 3+ hrs. How many times can you look at some chrome junk?( I was bored to death)(no Buell wall, or shelf in the store) When I got to go get my bike, I was told that there was a recall on the wind screen mounts but they didn't have the parts to fix it. It had a March 08 build, I bought it in Sept. 08, it was Oct. 08 when I took it in. Excuse me, But what the fiddlestix? What kind of unobtaineum are those mounts made out of? Yes I do take it over 125 on a regular basis. Just waiting to catch the window. As I'm checking out I tell the counter lady that I forgot to mention that I had found the left rear air box cover bolt under the seat but the plastic washer was missing. I told her I put it in the hole and snugged it down without the washer. The impression she left me with without actually saying it was (whatever). I was not amused. I don't feel like fighting with HD's bloated rude establishment. I presented the opportunity for them to shine and it did not happen.
Need more? How about the BRAG membership that I was promised to find out it no longer existed? Did they offer a HOG program to replace it? Not. Where is my copy of FUEL? Must have discontinued it, Eh? Yea they introduced me to the guy in charge of maintenance. I was left with the impression that he was forced to talk to another one of those Buell buyers. He couldn't explain what the exhaust valve did. Bonus points awarded for a correct answer in that he did know that the length of the intake runners did not change like on the formula 1 cars, Mind you this was an attempt to set him on the right path about the exhaust valve. Fail. I went to the new owners pizza night thingy. Anyone want the black with white skulls on it doo rag door prize they gave me to sit with all the real bikers?

That all said, I like my Buell. I like Buell. I own the corners where people flip me off for passing them. Haters. What we seam to have here, is a failure to communicate. (say the last line real slow)

Now to keep it on topic: How will they overcome this?

Sell more Buells. It's that simple really. It costs money to stock parts that you have no reasonable expectation to be able to turn around in a short time.

It would be nice if Buell would send recall parts to dealers for every bike the dealer sold. I understand why they don't though.

it is a shame that a lot of HD dealers just don't understand us and are hording the Buell line just for the riders edge class.
I think one way to help "flush" out those dealers is to move the current Blast to the HD line and make a new Blast DS/DM and a XB style Blast.

Heck the dealers with riders edge blast don't even stock gaskets and parts other then parts damaged from dropped bikes. I had to go to 3 different dealers to get a rubber intake boot!

If i didn't believe in the buy American good to support American workers, i would have just rode my Blast until the tags expired and traded for a Kawi.

hummm.....how about a minimum sales requirement to keep the Buell line? it would for the sandbagging dealers out of the market. ooo how about a bigger commission on Buells, the HD bikes sell themselves and sales man is just there to give the customer the papers to sign.
