The wife will be gone all day Saturday and thought it might be a good time to bake the muffler in our kitchen, after i prep and spray paint it with some VHT high temp paint. IIRC, it gets baked at 500* for an hour. Yes? No? Has anyone done this before? Just wanted to make sure I don't kill anybody the next time she bakes cookies. Yep. You will need a cover story, though. The baking process is STINKY. To pull this off, you are going to need to bite the bullet and clean the kitchen while you are cooking. You will need to get a can of oven cleaner and actually clean the oven. That way, when she smells the acrid odor of your muffler bake job, you can blame it on the oven cleaner. It seems like a bit of overkill, but trust me, it'll be less hassle than the tongue lashing you'd get. If you're lucky, you'll have a baked muffler, and might get a tongue lashing of a different sort.  | ||

Another good spray paint for high temps is Duplicolor 1200 black w/ceramic. I've been using it on air cooled VW Beetle headers for years and it's the only black high heat spray paint that will hold up for any length of time. The baking process usually involves driving the car on side streets at low speeds around for a while, like 20 minutes or so. That'll usually do it for the baking process. I let it cool down a little and then wipe it down with a clean rag and end up with a nice black semi-matt/gloss finish on the header. Lasts a long time compared to most spray can high temp paints. Next best thing to ceramic coating....for $7 a can......great stuff. I'd be using it on the XB muffler, but I've got the race muffler and it's already got a silver coating on it. Hey Fatty, LOL, thanks! That reminds me of the time I 'borrowed' my sister's canary yellow 1968 AMC Javelin when i was about 14 or so. I picked up a few buddies and we all went for a spirited ride in the country and I ended up driving through some guys yard and getting the car all muddy. I was mortified, and hurried back home to wash her car. As I was just about finished washing it she came home, saw me washing her car, smiled, and gave me 5 bucks. My heart was beating so fast when I saw her pulling in the drive, I couldn't say a word.  | ||

Thanks, Prowler ... I probably should use that instead, and just bake it on the bike. EDIT: Unlike headers, maybe the muffler doesn't get hot enough to bake it on. . (Message edited by johnboy777 on February 20, 2009) | ||

I used that VHT paint on mine, planning to bake it in my oven. Found out after I painted it that it doesn't fit in my oven. So I put it on the bike and let it idle until the fan came on. The paint looked like it cured only at the ends of the muffler, and didn't cure at all in the middle. So I took it out for a really good beating, figuring that would heat up the muffler. It didn't. It still looks good. It just didn't bake in the middle where the chin fairing covers it anyway. I'll have to see if it lasts or not. Probably should have gotten BBQ grill paint like I originally planned. | ||

Why waste your time and money on a rattle can paint job that's just going to turn to crap in short order? I sent the exhaust from my '06 Uly to Jet-Hot and had it ceramic coated. 16,000 miles later (when I traded it in on my '08 XT), it still looked good. I don't know why the factory doesn't ceramic coat their mufflers; they would look a lot better for a much longer time. | ||

Johnboy; I had the whole exhaust done, not just the muffler. My wife gave me a gift certificate for Christmas ('06), and it covered everything, including shipping. I don't know how much they'd want to do just a muffler. If you do decide to have Jet-Hot coat the muffler, run a tap through all the chin fairing mounting holes before you install the chin fairing. The ceramic plays hell with the stainless mounting bolts. | ||

Johnboy - I got a quote in October of last year for Sterling Jet Hot: Headers - $135 Muffler - $95 S/H - $34 Discounts - $23 Total - $241 Not sure what the discounts were about. The people at Jet Hot were very responsive. I got a firm quote in the mail very fast. | ||
