They make great table-tops and stools when you're camping as well; not to mention a convenient shelf to put crap on when you're working on, loading up, or simply fiddling with the bike.

One of the factors I like most about the Touratech & Happy Trail panniers is that there is room to adjust them on the racks front to back.

I need to make sure whichever option I choose for the racks has a cross-brace for added strength and durability (the Touratech pannier racks have them, as they are visible in the website pics - the Happy Trails racks I'm not so sure since the pictures are small and unrevealing).

I do like the top loading aspect of both TT & HT panniers, as well as the table or shelf option they do provide once off the bike.

What are the weight of those compared to the Buell Outdoorman?

It **looks** like the container itself **may** have consumed most the available weight carrying capacity.

I also like the Outdoorsman just cause I don't want to be staring at dents in my luggage all the time.

Those do indeed look Kate Smith large.

These are 41L's (that's cup size; ) I can't tell you the exact weight. It isn't posted on the Touratech website, but I can tell you they are light. I can carry the two of them (empty) with one pinkie finger hooked through the corner tie-down loops.

It's interesting how we treat weight. . . .

If these were wheels . . . . we'd be arguing over, and folks would be talking about paying an extra $1,000, an ounce. I recall the interest when I put the weight of the Marchisini, Castalloy and PM wheels in Battle2Win.

The bike has a finite load carrying capacity that is eroded by the weight of bags.

I think they all, in their unique ways, have various forms of "eye appeal". I kinda dig the rugged "Jesse" look of the square aluminum (are they?) bags.

At the same time I must say that the Outdoorsman bags I currently have on will carry about anything I can stuff in, are feather light, tough as can be (don't ask), tight as a drum and, not unlike myself, devilishly handsome.

The Outdoorsman bags are what SHOULD have come on the ULY from the start. They are better looking and far better made than the Journeyman bags.

Ok, did some digging and found the pannier weights.

Touratech
* 35L panniers --> 7.95 lbs each
* 41L panniers --> 8.7 lbs each


Tourtatech panniers


Happy Trail
* 22L panniers --> 6 lbs each
* 27.5L panniers --> 7.5 lbs each
* 32L panniers --> 9 lbs each


Happy Trail pannier info


I don't think these numbers are out of line with the factory luggage...

I have to disagree with that.The Outdoorsman bags are good looking, but so are the Journeyman bags. As far as better made, I don't think so. My wife has a set of 30 liter Junior bags that she's had on two separate bikes (first, a Moto Guzzi Breva, then her Ss) for a total of 50,000 miles. I've got about the same mileage with the Journeyman bags on first an '06 X and now an '08 XT. The Juniors will not fit a helmet, nor do they have the capacity of the Journeyman bags. While not prone to breakage, the latching system does not always line the lid up properly when closed, especially if the bags are very full. Being slimmer, the Juniors (or Outdoorsman) won't protect the bike as much in the event of a fall over. The Journeyman bags have proven their crashworthyness repeatedly.
The Journeyman bags are much better than most people realize, and they hold 50% more than the Juniors.

Thanks for digging that up. 16 lbs for the set seems a bit heavy, but it could be right. All I know is they're light enough to astonish you the first time you pick one up.

My biggest complaint is with the latch system. Were they metal instead of plastic, I'd be a Journeyman fan.

I've broken TWO latches. I got used to carrying back up latches, a roll of duct tape, on every trip because I never felt confident that the bags wouldn't fly open or latches break at any point in time.

THAT to me is a bad design. You could ALWAYS design the Outdoorsman (Juniors) to be larger and accommodate more capacity.

So, to me, the only real advantage of the Journeyman bags over the Juniors is size.

When I first bought my Uly I was trying to split the luggage between the HB side cases and the Outdoorsman top case. Buell wouldn't do it, or maybe couldn't do it. In either case, the Outdoorsman side cases are too small for my uses, but I really like the top case. The fact that it will hold two helmets side by side is great. For my needs that equates to two compact sleeping bags, tent, ground cover, and possibly other assorted crap. I despise the HB top case. it's too small and somewhat ugly (IMO). I also don't like they way it sits perched up and out over space like it does.
Anyway, since Buell wouldn't split the luggage set they offer for me, I decided to go a completely different way. The Touratech Zegas have always appealed to me, so I bit the bullet and paid a few extra bones for the 41L side cases.
The top case is an issue that I am currently resolving. Just today I ordered the Fehling rear carrier which will bolt up with the Touratech side mounts with a little tweaking. The Fehling rear rack will be the perfect base for either the Happy Trails, HB Gobi, or one of the other HB adventure type top-cases. I haven't fully mare up my mind on which one yet.
For me the biggest issue with a bag set is functionality. I have to carry a lot of crap when I commute and when I tour, camping is my preferred means of lodging. Fir these purposes a top loading system is the only way to go and with regards to personal taste, the more rigged and industrial the bags look, the better.

You CAN do this, but it takes a bit of work. First you have to order just the side bags. Then you have to order the outdoorsman topcase as a service part, or buy the 45 liter HB version of the topcase and order three locks that correspond to your keycode. I replaced my old topcase for the 45 Liter HB version. I even posted a write-up of how to change out the locks in the information archive area.

I think most bags are ugly. Still, I have been spoiled to being able to carry stuff around with me so I don't think I'll ever own a bike that doesn't have some kind of luggage. From the options available for the Uly I think the Outdoorsmen are the best looking (least ugly). I also understand they are more waterproof/durable than the Journeys, so they would be my first choice. I'm just not the adventure type I don't guess, because big aluminum boxes mounted on the side of a bike are just not my thing. But hey, if that's what you like, get the biggest, most industrial looking metal boxes you can find.

So, to me, the only real advantage of the Journeyman bags over the Juniors is size.

H&B make a 40 liter version of the Junior bags. They're the same length and height as the 30L. bags, but they're about four inches wider each.

FYI...
Just heard back from Twisted Throttle; the Fehling racks use 16mm diameter tubing.

This may be useful if mix & matching with metal panniers and the mounting brackets.

Is the Happy Trail SU Rack (pannier mounting racks) compatible with the Fehling top case rack from Twisted Throttle? Anyone on the BadWeb have/try this combo?

Hello

I have the setup you speak of. I had to use a combination of washers and bolts to give the clearance between the HT mounting rack and the Fehling rack. In doing so you may have to use longer hardware for the Fehling rack.I also had to loosen the bolts for the rear sub-frame to give some wiggle room when installing the HT racks. I have the HT 7.5 inch boxes. The 9 inch HT boxes would give you a bit more packing space. Good service from both companies.

Here's some pix of the Uly I mentioned earlier with the mix of Touratech side carriers and the Fehling rear rack. He did a pretty clean job if integrating the two. MY Fehling will arrive this Friday, but I plan on mounting a different top case; not sure what yet.

Is it just me? I've always hated those square ugly boxes on ANY bike. Things should have both form and functionality. Somehow that seems to be lost on all of those boxes bolted onto bikes. Take a beautiful looking bike like the Uly bolt on some boxes, and now you have a nice look bike with warts attached. Now granted there are some bikes that are already ugly (pre-07 Triumph Tiger) and bolting on boxes doesn't hurt their already ugly appearance.

I just don't get it.

Wbrisett, I agree. I personally think the squareness of the panniers like those above contradict the flowing lines of the motorcycle. They look like they belong on the side of a HMMWV or an M1A2, not a motorcycle...

But that's what's great about motorcycling - anyone can mod their own bike however they like, and as long as they're good ambassadors of the sport, I couldn't care less!

I had the Touratechs on my Vstrom and they are really great; strong, water-tight, work great as a cooler and hold a ton of stuff (and that was the 35L!) BUT, on more that one occasion, a lid would come undone and fly off. Twice I had to beat the lids back into shape with a hammer and 2x4. Looked like crap but worked. I'll admit, the first time was my fault for not locking both latches but subsequent times both were locked. I had to use zip ties to ensure the front latches wouldn't come undone. I like the top loading of the Zegas much more than the Journeyman but I really don't have any complaint with the HB. They work well and look good. Zegas are definitely better for stickers though.
